Durham Beyond Policing is a grassroots formation to divest from policing and prisons and reinvest our local budgets into community safety, wellness and care.

: A call to action put forth by Southerners on New Ground (NC), and the Durham chapter of the Black Youth Project 100

We as members of the Durham community fully oppose the multi-million dollar expansion of policing and criminalization in our neighborhoods. We want the city of Durham to divest from police and prisons and instead fund black futures and invest in black and brown community needs. We want living wage jobs, not cops; funding for public education, not cops; access to mental health services, not cops; sustainable food and water sources, not cops; affordable housing, not cops; free public transportation, not cops; free childcare, not cops. We want a Durham where the police no longer get more support than residents and we exercise a democracy that allows us to dictate where our money is spent. ICE, police, checkpoints out of our neighborhoods!

Fact: Local elections matter & can most directly impact our daily lives here in Durham!

Fact: It’s the last week of Early Voting here in the Bull City!

Fact: Our Nothin But Facts Campaign is having a Community Block party this upcoming Tues, Sept.30th & Thurs, Oct.2nd, from 4-6pm at the East Durham Library (211 Lick Creek Lane, Durham). Come out to dance, chat with neighbors & enjoy free food from (we will be there rain or shine)!

The Nothin But Facts Campaign is an effort to let community know they have power in the local elections and to inform them of what’s going on in this election. We are not affiliated with nor are supporting any candidate.

Israel’s ongoing deliberate starvation of over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza has created famine conditions that grow increasingly dire. Deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate. The U.S., despite having the power to stop the famine, continues to unabashedly support and permit the Israeli government to starve Gaza. We must respond with renewed, escalated action and calls for immediate restoration of the flow of humanitarian aid, and an end to the genocide.

Durham Beyond Policing joins the Triangle chapter of Jewish Voices for Peace in a rolling solidarity fast and calls for Senator Thom Tillis to use his power as the chair of the Senate Human Rights Caucus to:

1. Vote to support S.Res.224 and SB898 to restore funding for UNRWA and deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza, and
2. Prevent future weapons sales to Israel.

We are all obligated to speak up and cry out: LET GAZA LIVE.

✊🏾 Gather with us for fun & learning on Tuesday, June 17th from 6-8pm at Wheels Durham (715 N Hoover Rd)! Here we will have free food & skating for the 1st 100 youth. We will share more about what we’ve heard about community-led safety from our neighbors interviewed through the East Durham Community Design Project.

The themes of what came up focused on creating more youth programming, tending to gun violence & addressing the housing crisis in Durham. Do you have any ideas or resources related to any of these 3 themes? Share what you have in the comments below! 👀💬

Be sure to save the date & share with those you know!

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Over 2,400 neighbors throughout Durham city & county have petitioned for the expansion of HEART! Our county neighbors including DPS students need full access to unarmed crisis care, you can’t schedule when & where crisis happens.

This is our opportunity to hold Durham County Commissioners to the commitments they made to community members at the top of this year to bring HEART to the County. We need them to commit to funding the expansion & working with the city along with DPS on an inter-local agreement.
