Wise Body Moves Is your body struggling to keep up with you as you get older?

I help aging, changing bodies move more easily and with less pain, so they can keep doing what they love. I make physical activity easier (and hopefully more fun) for people whose bodies are changing - usually with age, though also with injury or illness. I especially love working with people who have passed their 60th (or 70th, 80th and 90th!) birthday, and I'm skilled in working with a wide range of medical conditions and injuries. I’m also an advocate for the Triangle and NC Falls Prevention Coalitions - working to keep everyone standing strong!

Triangle area friends:
There are FREE fall risk screenings this week in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough on 2 different days (details below).

At these events, screeners (including me) will administer evidence-based “tests” long recommended by the CDC, and will provide participants with results to share with their physician.

This is a great opportunity to get a professional assessment of your fall risk, so you can learn how to lower it! Compliments of Fyzical in North Chapel Hill and the Orange County Department on Aging. And Fall Prevention Awareness Week. 😊

If you have any questions, feel free to put them in comments.

* Wednesday, September 24th | 10:00–11:30 AM | Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27516

* Friday, September 26th | 10:00–11:30 AM | Passmore Center, 103 Meadowlands Dr, Hillsborough, NC 27278

Heard today from a client: "Those neck and upper back rotation moves you taught me are in the category of miracle. They make all movements throughout the day easier."

You don't need a magic wand for this. Start with this one simple thing (from Doctor Jo ... turn your volume down for the first few seconds....)

Cervical rotation is a very simple move, but it really helps loosen up pain and tension in your neck and shoulders. Watch more Ask Doctor Jo videos featuring...

Alison is known most for her teachings related to osteoporosis.

And what she shows in this video about the importance of foot mobility is valuable information for everyone, regardless of your bone density.

Enjoy!

The top recommendation from orthopedic surgeons interviewed for this article?

Movement!

Such as gentle stretching and mobilization (they didn’t use that word, but this is what they’re referring to).

Moving - even gentle movement - helps circulate the fluid that keeps your joints lubricated

Sitting still too long does the opposite, creating stiffness.

Note: While the article also mentions the standard recommendation to get 150 minutes of exercise each week, anything more than you are currently doing is always beneficial.

Do what you CAN, and notice how it helps.

From a PBS report this week (linked in comments):

"Every minute of exercise gives you 5 extra minutes of life."
I'm no mathematician, but that seems like a pretty good payout.

Plus: the changes that occur throughout your body let you make the most of that added time (this is the difference between life span and HEALTH span).

ANY movement is better than none when it comes to reaping these benefits.

Don't know where to start or how much to do? That's why people like me have jobs. ;)

I can see a fall prevention tip in so many things. 😆

As you adventure into new places over the holidays - even just other people's homes - remember to watch where you're stepping.

Have a plan for stepping safely out of tight, crowded spaces....

COLUMBUS, GA—Drawing a blank just seconds after landing on the trunk of the Douglas fir, local domestic shorthair Butterscotch confirmed Thursday that clinging to the side of the Christmas tree was the extent of his plan. “Okay, so I’ve jumped halfway up the trunk of the tree and dug my nails ...

In today's happy news, this achievement reported by a long time client:
“I solo hiked an ascent from my college days — almost 50 years from my graduation! 3.6 miles, 736 feet elevation gain and one scramble. I’m elated! Thanks for helping me get here.”

Congrats, Peter!

Heard today from a client: "Being able to climb the stairs without using the railing [and without pain] is beyond exciting."

What's so exciting about that?

When she contacted me in the Spring, her goal was to "put off" her seemingly inevitable knee replacements.

Now she's wondering if she'll ever need them.

That's why it's so exciting to climb the stairs hands-free and without pain.

And even if she ends up needing surgery down the road, she'll go in a lot stronger and recover much better because of the wise moves she made these last few weeks. ☺️

I’ve seen too many of my clients disregarded by their physicians, feeding the idea that a person “at their age” should let go of the desire to keep moving as much as they want to.

If your physician is not supporting your ability to have the best-working body you can - at any age - find a new one!

Ageism in healthcare can have real consequences. One out of five adults over the age of 50 years experiences discrimination in healthcare settings.

How does ageism affect healthcare and access to services for older individuals?
