May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. If you, a loved one, or someone you know is struggling, remember—you are not alone. There is help available, and healing is possible.

Here are some resources to consider:
• National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Call or text the NAMI Helpline at 800-950-6264 or visit www.nami.org for support and resources.
• 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 to connect with trained counselors who can provide free, confidential support 24/7.
• Crisis Text Line: Text HELLO to 741741 for free, confidential crisis counseling anytime.
• SAMHSA National Helpline: Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for confidential, free help from public health agencies to find treatment options.

You matter, and help is within reach. Let’s continue to break the stigma and support one another.

On January 25th, 2025 NAMI Durham and NAMI South Mountains are teaming up for another Virtual NAMI Smarts for Advocacy class. Taught by Lorraine Childs and Diane Krisanda, you are invited to join us at our upcoming advocacy session and make your voice heard.

NAMI Smarts for Advocacy will enhance your advocacy skills and help you shape a powerful and personal story that will move policy makers. The NAMI Smarts for Advocacy engages you in hands-on learning to build and strengthen skills. Whether you are new to advocacy or have years of experience you will leave the training with messages, step-by-step tools and the practice you need to feel informed, confident and ready to make a difference. We’ll also give you some tips and tools to have an effective meeting with your legislator.

Once registered, we will also email exercises for you to fill out during the session. There will be certificates available after completion of this NAMI grassroots skill-building workshop.

Each year, members of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) are recognized by the CIT Leadership Team for their dedication and outstanding service. Departments nominate individuals who have gone above and beyond in supporting our community and transforming the response to mental health crises.

A heartfelt thank you to the first responders from Durham Tech, NCCU, Durham Police Department, Durham EMS, and the HEART team for your advocacy and commitment to our community. Warm congratulations to this year’s CIT Award recipients!

If you missed the ceremony, here are a few moments captured from the event. Special thanks to for organizing another impactful celebration, and everyone involved in this great work.
