“Beyond Recognition: What Comes Next for the People of the Dark Water”

🗓️ Date: January 29, 2026
⏰ Time: 6:00-7:30 PM ET
📍 Where: Virtual (Zoom)
🔗 Register: https://www.currenttriballaw.com/events

Current Tribal Law & Policy, PLLC is proud to host this discussion on the impact of federal recognition in the wake of the recent passage of the Lumbee Fairness Act which provided the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina with full federal recognition. We look forward to remarks from Lumbee Chairman John Lowery and insights from Arlinda Locklear, Dr. Danielle Hiraldo, A.C. Locklear, and Jody Cummings.

This is a free event designed for tribal citizens, tribal leaders and staff, community members, and partners who want a clear, practical overview of what changes (and what doesn’t) when full federal recognition becomes reality. Our panelists will lean on their real-world experiences to discuss how recognition has impacted other tribes and what opportunities may be available to the People of the Dark Water. The discussion will be followed by a live Q&A, with space for your questions and the issues you want addressed.

Please share this post and invite someone who needs to hear this update. 💛🖤❤️

From Cultural Burning to Clean Energy: $1M Supporting Indigenous Climate Solutions and Innovation

Today, Decolonizing Wealth Project's Indigenous Earth Fund awarded $1 million to 30 Indigenous-led organizations advancing climate solutions across the U.S.

This year's grantees are -
Launching traditional land stewardship and cultural burning practices
Delivering 235 MW of clean energy and jobs on Standing Rock
Building climate resilience for Alaska Native communities

"For centuries, Indigenous peoples have nurtured their lands and communities with resilience, wisdom, and care," says Edgar Villanueva, Founder & CEO. "Our Indigenous Earth Fund is a commitment to sustaining that leadership, supporting organizations that turn traditional knowledge into protective and regenerative action."

When Indigenous nations are resourced and empowered, we see ecosystems not only come back to life, but thrive. Investing in these communities isn't charity—it's a high-impact climate strategy with proven returns in biodiversity, carbon storage, and resilience.

The challenge? We received 180 applications requesting over $9 million in total. We could only fund $1M.

"The funding gap for our communities is painfully obvious," shares Dr. Dana Arviso, Director of Indigenous Programs. "We invite funders looking to support proven climate-protecting activities to reach out."
