Today my daughter Kaitlyn Purkey gets to celebrate her 23rd birthday. Kaitlyn received her double lung transplant due to her cystic fibrosis on March 22, 2019 at Duke. Since then she has accomplished so much. She is finally able to breath and live her life. Thanks so much to her amazing donor, her wonder medical team at Duke many, many prayers and to God. I now have a vibrant, healthy daughter who has accomplished so much. Happy birthday Kaitlyn.

In the blink of an eye, one year ago today Kaitlyn Purkey started her transplant journey with her first day of a 5 day evaluation. It has all been a whirlwind and time has flown by. So very thankful God blessed her and our family. So thankful for some young mans selfless decision to give others a second chance at life. So thankful for an awesome medical team and amazing family and friends. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I am so unbelievably proud of Kaitlyn for her decision to go this route and how well she has done since. I love you Kaitlyn and am so proud of you.

The first pic was taken at our Christmas party Dec. 15, 2018 pre transplant the second one was taken at our Christmas Dec. 14, 2019 almost 9 months post transplant. The change is amazing. Thanking God for this walking, taking miracle I get to witness everyday. God, her donor, family, friends and an amazing medical team made this possible. We are blessed beyond measure.

Got some answers to the possible cause of most of her issues. It’s possibly the high dose of steroids. Dr has decreased her from 20mg to 10mg daily. Her pfts were down slightly, but lung volumes up some. Dr. Says tomorrow’s bronch will hopefully give more definitive answers.

Well here we are at Duke for Kaitlyns 6 month checkup today and bronchoscope tomorrow. Doesn’t seem like it will be 6 months on the 22 of September. Please remember her as she has been having a few issues and that they will just be minor and can be easily resolved.

Update on Kaitlyn:
She has been accepted to Walter State to begin her journey to become a Surgical Technician. She has had meetings this past week and has everything in place. Kaitlyn has received the Pell Grant. She lacks a little more assistance on having everything covered. Does anyone know of any scholarships she can apply for that hasn’t closed for the year? We have searched online, and keep getting hit with fraudulent ads. Her deadline is Aug. 14, this is the first time in a long time that I have seen her this excited for something, and we would love to see her pursue her dream.

“God’s grace led us here and His grace will lead us on”. Creating this page and updating it has been an honor and a privilege and I truly appreciate each and everyone of you for following along with our journey. Your love, kindness, generosity, encouragement but most of all, your prayers have meant the world to us. Through this Gods grace, mercy and love led us through a long and arduous journey. His timing was perfect from placing Kaitlyn at the facility she needed to this point and beyond. There have been highs and lows on this journey, but with His grace and the love and encouragement from a wonderfully supportive family and a host of friends she has made it. Along this journey we have come to know a lot of wonderful people walking the same path that we have and they are people who will stay in our hearts and minds for a lifetime, for without you there to share stories of encouragement and a supportive shoulder, this process would have been so much harder. Having updated everyone for the past 6 months, I think it is time I step away for a while and just concentrate on my family and our many many blessings that God has so abundantly given us. I will try to update every 3 months as she goes back to Duke for her routine checkups and bronchs. If in the meantime something arises I will update as it warrants. Again to say thank you to everyone seems so small in the larger scheme of things, but each and everyone of you will forever be a part of our lives and we will be eternally grateful. Please feel free to ask about her as you want. We love each of you and pray Gods blessings on you as He has so richly blessed us.
