“Resistance to taking a shower”
One common caregiver mistake is assuming resistance to bathing is simply stubbornness.
In reality, showering can become frightening, exhausting, embarrassing, confusing, or physically uncomfortable for many older adults—especially when cognitive changes, balance concerns, or loss of privacy are involved.
What looks like “refusing help” may actually be fear, loss of dignity, or difficulty processing the task itself.
Understanding the reason behind resistance often changes how we respond.
