They are lying to you. They are selling you a bill of goods.
They don't care about your health. They care about their bottom line.
We at hellomellow are literally the opposite of this.
I made hellomellow for me, my massage practice clients, and my loved ones. I never once looked at ingredient prices. I looked at the quality of the ingredients and tried them on my sensitive body first to see what felt good and what did not.
As a massage therapist, I started investigating what ingredients were in the products that the massage industry was using widely.
😱 The more I looked, the more I learned, the more I was scared and convinced the creams and lotions, the fake fragrances, the parabens and emulsifiers I could not pronounce were not necessary and dangerous.
The research revealed parabens in cancerous breast tissue, again and again, and I decided I was done using anything that was toxic or had names I could not pronounce in the ingredients list.
That night I threw out everything in my house.
It was a long night.
It was 2006, and as I went through my house I ended up throwing out not only my massage creams and lotions but cleaning supplies, shampoo, and makeup. I cleaned out the house and started my quest to make products I felt safe using on myself and my family, but also that didn’t make me feel like a fraud using on the humans who were paying me to heal their bodies.
It wasn’t easy as people in the skin care industry fought with me, called me names, and tried to embarrass me for my beliefs. I didn’t care or see the point. My answer was always to use whatever you want, but I do not see why I would choose to use something that might cause cancer in my body.
So off I went learning and creating.
Bonus, I am super sensitive. I get headaches instantly if smells are synthetic or intense. My skin reacts to everything. I have always struggled with auto-immune issues and later found out that I have the MTFR gene which makes all sorts of sense. If you struggle detoxifying in your own body this world filled with toxins everywhere you look can be a challenge.
Even looking into the skincare and cosmetic industry gave me hives.
The information and marketing that comes at you is:
➡️ Endless
➡️ Overwhelming
➡️ Confusing
➡️ Stressful
I wanted to make something
✅ Trustworthy
✅ Effective
✅ Stress-free
Hence, the name hellomellow.
What I learned in starting to formulate my own products was that as soon as you add water to a product you need emulsifiers and preservatives to keep the consistency and freshness.
So why add water?
They will tell you because you like it that way.
That oil feels gross and sticky.
Sadly they have trained you.
My thoughts… they add water because it’s cheap.
It's the first ingredient in almost anything you have in your bathroom, which means it is the highest quantity of what is in your product.
Let’s think about it.
What happens when you lick your lips?
The more you lick, the more chapped, irritated, and red they become.
Exactly.
Water strips your skin of its natural oils. It dehydrates your skin. You slap on more of the crap you bought that promised you it would stop the dry feeling. Ugggg it infuriates me!
I figured in the same way I care for what I am eating and how whole and clean the ingredients are that make up my food, why not care the same way about what goes on my skin?!
I mean your skin is your largest organ. It should be nourished.
And it’s job?
To protect your insides from outside toxins.
So why add toxins?? Why give your body more to try to detoxify? Why overload and stress your system?
The idea is to nourish your body in any way possible.
And stress?
As we know, it’s the worst on your body! Adding toxins adds stress and you know what your skin does? It reacts. It rashes and inflames to protect itself, to try to get rid of the chemical attack that has been placed on it.
Also to do its job well the skin needs to be in its best health. The healthier the tissues are the better the skin defends your well-being. Cracked, dry, thinning skin leaves you susceptible to toxins and germs. Are you worried yet?
Just the stress of synthetic fragrances and dyes alone could send your poor body and skin into a revolt.
I obviously could go on and on. This is important to me. If it’s important to you, I’m so grateful you found hellomellow.
17 years after I started my quest to make hellomellow, the industry has come around and is proving my point. The problem is they use a lot of fancy marketing and buzzwords because they know you’ve gotten smarter, but their labels don’t back it up.
I bet if you’re the kind of person that reads labels at the supermarket, you’re the kind of person that reads labels on your skincare. You’ll love our labels.
