Surgery for cancer is often the primary modality of treatment for cure. It doesn’t have to be scary. Speaking for myself, I use techniques to minimize all scars often removing the cancerous segment via a natural or***ce. This allows the patient to have the same number and smaller incisions than a gallbladder removal or hernia repair. I remember being a third year medical student assisting on a thyroid surgery when people came into the room to tell us what they saw in the news about what was happening in NY, DC and PA. Continually coming in the room seemingly never ending with news of terror while our surgeon remained calm and focused on the surgery he was performing. A surreal experience that I hope I (and my children) never live long enough to see a repeat of. I remember and I am filled with gratitude to all of the responders who put their lives in danger to help save those that could.

This is no small feat. We are not just “a heart hospital”. St. Francis Hospital is now ranked 24th in the nation in GI and GI Surgery. Our rise in the rankings over the last year are largely due to our Chief of GI, Christopher J. DiMaio and his leadership and expansion of the GI department. On the surgery side, we have just hired 2 more excellent colorectal surgeons and it is our mission to keep us rising in the ranks.
