I feel mixed about this holiday since becoming a mother- part of me wants to be celebrated and celebrate the other mamas in my life and another part feels angry that mothers can only claim one day a year to be appreciated and recognized in the way they should and need to be every day of the year.

Our society doesn’t prepare women to be mothers or support mothers in the most foundational ways and our culture does not place enough value on motherhood. Breakfast in bed once a year is lovely but doesn’t take the place of helping mothers feel seen, cared for, tended to and appreciated in the regular way we need.

With the constant work of recreating the care of an entire village, the day in and day out sacrifice of our physical/mental/emotional bodies, the ever-present struggle to quantify the work we are doing to the world that exists outside of our homes, the isolation and lack of support so many mothers experience, the grief and confusion of moving from maidenhood to motherhood without cultural rite of passage rituals- mothering in this place and time is very demanding and we really need to be nurtured, appreciate and loved for it by our people. Our mama hearts need it to thrive and be the mamas we want to be.

To the mamas out there- I feel you, I see you, I honor you! Thank you for doing the work, I know how impossibly hard it is and you are doing it! Your children are so blessed to have you. 💕🌟🌷✨💗

Oh hellloooooooo lilacs 💜💜💜 It’s one of my favorite times of the year. 😍

Time to fill my home with the luscious and heady scent of these magical purple blossoms. Time to make lilac honey, lilac syrup, candied-lilacs and my dear friend’s annual lilac-themed birthday cake. This year’s cake was a plush vanilla cake with raw whipped cream and candied lilacs. 💜

“Look mommy, a beautiful flower!” 🌸✨💗 Thank you little teacher, thank you every day, thank you for stopping us again and again, for slowing us down over and over, for reminding us to look, to smell, to touch, to play, to use all of our senses to take in this beautiful, intoxicating world, to embody wonder and to just be here now. 🙏🏻🌷☀️
