Lieutenant preparing to go into a house fire by himself. Why? Because the 2 seats behind him — where the rest of the crew should be sitting — are empty. If he’s coming to look for you, do you want him going in alone?

Now that members of the department, command staff, and the YAUFR Commission Chair return from accreditation this weekend, the real work begins.

In just 4 days, more than 200 people have signed our petition calling for increased staffing. 4 is a great number — it’s also the nationally recognized minimum staffing standard for firefighters on an apparatus.

This week, one of the most important recommendations for YAUFR was released:

“It is recommended the agency review and revise staffing models to determine the number of staff needed to effectively and safely operate, taking into consideration the agency’s critical task analyses, agency policies, and/or best practice models.”

If you live or work in Springettsbury, Spring Garden, or Manchester Township, we need your support.

Please sign our petition. We will bring your voices directly to the elected officials responsible for making these decisions — the decisions that determine whether your fire department arrives fully staffed when you need them most.

On behalf of the members of the Greater York Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 2377, we would like to congratulate York Area United Fire & Rescue on achieving International Accredited Agency status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. This recognition reflects the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of the firefighters, officers, and staff who serve our community every day.

Accreditation is an important milestone and represents the hard work that went into evaluating the department’s operations, policies, and service delivery. Our members take pride in being part of an organization that strives to improve and deliver the highest level of service possible to the residents of Springettsbury, Spring Garden, and Manchester Townships.

However, accreditation and the recommendations that come with it are only meaningful if they lead to action and measurable improvements. The self-assessment and peer review process is designed to identify areas where departments must continue to grow and strengthen their service delivery.

One of the most critical areas affecting both firefighter safety and public safety is adequate staffing on fire apparatus. Our members continue to respond to emergencies with limited personnel, often arriving on scene understaffed while attempting to perform multiple critical tasks simultaneously. Fires, rescues, and medical emergencies demand coordinated and timely action, and proper staffing is essential to ensuring those tasks can be completed safely and effectively.

As the department celebrates this achievement, we believe it is equally important to ensure that the findings and recommendations from the accreditation process are addressed in a meaningful way. Accreditation should serve as a roadmap for improvement — not simply a designation.

Our firefighters stand ready every day to serve the community with professionalism and dedication. They deserve the staffing, resources, and support necessary to safely perform their duties and protect the residents who rely on them.

We look forward to working collaboratively with department leadership and municipal officials to ensure that the accreditation process results in real improvements that strengthen both firefighter safety and the level of service provided to our community.

Once again, congratulations on achieving this milestone.

York Area United Fire and Rescue just released its 2025 Annual Report.

The report highlights many of the great things our firefighters do for the community every day — responding to emergencies, training, public education, and fire prevention programs. These efforts make our community safer and are something we take great pride in.

But the report also reveals a serious problem. We DO NOT have enough firefighters on duty to adequately respond to emergencies.

Our members continue to answer every call and do the job with the staffing they’re given. But the data in the report clearly shows the strain placed on crews when there simply aren’t enough personnel available to respond.

Our firefighters — and the citizens we serve — deserve safe staffing. When seconds matter, having enough firefighters on duty can mean the difference between a small incident and a tragedy.
