Something beautiful happened today, I danced on ice. That white stuff right there isn’t snow.. It’s ice. Thankfully, I remained upright the whole journey. It was the most fun that I have ever had on a hike because there was no one around and I sang the entire Frozen soundtrack. Yes, I am that weirdo that knows every lyric to that movie, I even have the Frozen Sing-A-Long DVD gifted to me by my beloved cousin. I admit, I sometimes change the lyrics.. “the snow bothers me anyway” is my favorite twist. Lord knows that I do not bode well in winter. Which is why it is so precious that I was able to experience today and enjoy the beauty of winter with some warmer air. I went down to part of the lake that was still frozen on top and you could feel the cold air rising up from the lake with the heat of the sun and warm air all around you. Pratyahara is sensory mastery in yoga. It was a neat experience to be able to take some time and meditate in this rather rare situation. God is good. Life is beautiful. I love yoga.
At work the guys were talking about “the ides of March”. It truly was a bizarre schedule that allowed me to get out early to enjoy this warmth. My tribe heralds this time as the Mercury Retrograde. Indeed for me, this time in nature helped me find some clarity. I am harnessing this energy to help me grow. There are some shifts happening with my yoga class at , stay tuned for more updates. When God closes a door, he always opens a window. I pray you enjoy the beauty of this as much as I. 🙏🏻🕉🧘🏼‍♀️

I love being able to teach my group yoga classes what I learn through playing at my Comprehensive Yoga Therapy training. We had a lot of fun last night playing with different ways of using props and I was even able to get everyone to move through the propped Warrior III to fly in a full body engaged flying inversion engaging our cores and pressing into the chair with our arms and the wall with our foot. It was so exhilarating to see my yogis experience this strong empowering asana. It’s what I love most about having this loft to practice my authentic yoga. It has truly been an awesome year meeting students and sharing our yoga together. Unfortunately, after a year of trying to reach out to the community, and not being able to establish a stable following, I and have decided that we will be holding yoga these last two Wednesday’s in March and then the second 3 Thursdays in April, and if we continue to not have at minimum 5 students the room will be opened to other events. It’s such a big space, and a perfect place to hold yoga, but it is also a shame to not give other groups the opportunity to utilize the room. So if you’ve always wanted to take my class, now is the time. Hope to see you there and keep this yoga class alive. @ Joyful Self Wellness Center

I had such a wonderful time exploring props, closed-chain connections, and orientations among other different ways of playing with asana during my adaptive yoga weekend at Comprehensive Yoga Therapy training. It felt so empowering to do this Warrior III pose against the wall and inverted using the chair as props. Especially since I have only recently recovered from those intense neck spasms a few weeks ago. What started as a supported Warrior III using the closed-chain connection through pressing the lifted leg into the wall behind me and balancing on the back of the chair led to pressing into the chair with my hands and my foot into the wall to engage my core and lift my standing foot mere inches off the ground, to then calling upon more strength to raise the leg up into this inverted pose. It felt like I was flying. Perhaps we will try this in class this week on Thursday night from 6-7:30 at . Please note date and time change for this week as I have NP class again this Wednesday. We will be moving yoga permanently to Thursdays starting 4/11. See you there! 🙏🏻🧘🏼‍♀️🕉

Reclined pigeon is one of my favorite postures. It’s a hip opener and targets the piriformis muscle, which I like to call the tight ass muscle because I always seem to have mine clenched, and I can admit that sometimes I can be a little bit of a tight ass about things. Thank God for yoga and hip openers. Some postulate that we hold our negative emotions in our hips which is why they get so tight and we start to have gait abnormalities, or weird ways of walking. Others agree it’s because we spend so much time sitting in our modern sedentary lifestyles filled with desk jobs, binge watching and social media. I say that whatever the reason may be that our hips are so tight, we need to give ourselves the time and space to release that tension. And the best place for you to do this is my yoga class on Wednesday nights. As you can see, there is plenty of room for you and you’ll be able to get some more one on one attention while my class size is still small. This has been a strange winter with many class cancellations due to weather and other concerns. I will try to post an update before this Wednesday night yoga, which I am currently planning on holding, unless my lab is canceled on Monday due to the snow and switched to Wednesday night for make-up. Hopefully that won’t happen and we all can loosen our tight asses with some love and hip opening stretches. Wednesday night yoga will be canceled on 3/13 due to a special lab on the male and female genitalia where DeSales hires people to demonstrate and teach us the proper way to use a speculum and preform that delicate exam. Also, an amazing fortunate experience during my cadaver lab last Monday will lead for me to be able to discuss and investigate the physical nerve plexuses and their innervation with the organs and areas that the ancient Yogis attributed to be the Chakras in a cadaver with our anatomist professor. I am beyond excited for this opportunity! I love being a student Comprehensive Yoga Therapist Family Nurse Practitioner and combining these two philosophies of study to become a holistic advanced care practitioner. Just need to make it through all this schooling first. Again, thank God for Yoga.

Last night I enjoyed my first yoga class of the New Year. We had two new yogis join us and continued with our Yin to Vin beginners style class. The Vinyasa part was a little challenging, but everyone enjoyed it and kept up well, which was wonderful for me to experience. 2019 has definitely been a blessed year thus far, and I am so excited to see what the rest of the year has to offer. Our class focused on hip openers, because who doesn’t have tight hips, and brought in a little heart and chest opening with our Vinyasas moving through Cobra and Up Dog. But I chose a Yin Swan pose for our photo for the evening. Some of you may refer this as Pigeon, but in Yin Yoga we call this Swan. I am so blessed to have the ability to receive so much training and education in Yoga and Yoga philosophy from . I am also so grateful for everyone that comes to my class and allows me to experiment and share my Yoga with them. And I invite everyone that lives in the Easton area to join me next Wednesday night from 6-7:30 at . #2019

I am grateful for this journey that I am on which has granted me this time to be with family and friends. My first stop was taking my aunt in NC down to her brother and sister in SC. It’s nice to be at my parents new house. I am still haven’t figured out exactly where I am going, but I know that I will enjoy the way.

Finished out my last yoga class of 2018 with my favorite two yogis. So grateful for the opportunity to share my yoga with these two. I continue to grow as a yoga instructor trying new things with them. Learning when and where props are appropriate for beginner level yoga students. One of the greatest parts of having 2 regular students is that I am not only blessed to see their progress they make from week to week, but also when they make comments about how they’re feeling in class, I am capable of switching things up for them. I had wanted to celebrate the Winter Solstice with sun and moon salutations, but after doing the full moon, it was brought to my attention that they were both experiencing lower back tightness, so we went back down to the floor for some Yin and lower back love. Another wonderful liberty that I have with these two is that I am able to explore different yoga practices with them without having to feel intimidated that they may not like the practices that I throw at them. Like Yin when I only had half the training this past weekend at Comprehensive Yoga Therapy training. They loved it, I loved being able to teach it, and it was a wonderful experience. They even said that it was my best class. Yin for the win!! I will miss these two for the next 3 weeks while I travel south for some warmer weather and family and friends. But I look forward to next year when we move back to Wednesday nights for a semester and all of the new yogis I will teach in the new year.

Trying my hand at making a homemade chicken stock from scratch using fresh herbs and the leftovers from a chicken I used on Sunday. I didn’t follow any given recipe, but I used some tips from Yoga Bob and a book he recommended Nourishing Broth by sally Fallon Morell. I truly believe in the power of food as medicine and I am hoping that this broth and soup that I will make with it tomorrow after it simmers over night will get me out of this funk that I have been in the last few weeks. It’s already filling my house with such amazing aromas from the herbs I used.

Ever grateful for my ability to share my yoga at my Tuesday night class. Teaching this class has transformed what I believe a yoga class “should” be. Since I am fortunate to only have a few students regularly come, I have the ability to tailor the class to their needs. I use my assessment skills both as a RN and as a RYT and when I see a yogi struggling because they are ill, but didn’t want to miss two weeks of yoga in a row, because of how good they feel after my class, I am able to do a very slow flow class mostly on the floor as to not aggravate their cold. An assessment of tight hips leads to a change in our opening posture, easy sit, which is not always so easy for people who are used to sitting all day in hip flexion. So we pushed two blocks together and put a blanket on top. Now the hips are elevated and the knees can reach closer to the floor and we can comfortably spend the time needed for pranayama practice and warm up movements. Unable to flow through vinyasa because of a cold, we head to cool down early and do supported back bends and then this pose at the wall to complete our hip openers for the night. One of my new favorite closed chain reclined postures at the wall, reverse pigeon. You get such an awesome stretch and release while being able to feel the comfort of the ground supporting your body and the wall supporting your foot so that your hips are stabilized and can relax open and stretch and release all their tension. If you live in the Easton area and have always wanted to try out yoga but think that it’s only about twisting into a pretzel or feel intimidated because you don’t know any of the postures, my class is for you. We’ll only be on Tuesday nights for 2 more weeks before I leave to take advantage of my only semester break for my MSN and head south to warmer states for a few weeks. Then starting January 9, we’ll be back on Wednesday nights from 6-7:30. See you there.

Last night I unfortunately had no yogis join me at my yoga class. A couple were ill and a couple stuck at work. I usually just pack up and head home, but last night I chose to stay. I honored the old bank converted into office space with a loft where I hold my yoga class. It’s been a while since I have not had students but I just keep reminding myself that not everyone knows and understands how amazing it feels and how great it is for your body to have a regular yoga practice. It’s so easy to internalize situations which are outside of our control. I used to get so upset, but I am learning to accept all things as neutral. I have been using my yoga as a way to break old patterns of thoughts and behaviors. It’s been liberating. And I am also seeing the changes in my posture as in this half splits. I may still have a long way to go to look like some beautiful pictures of this asana, but using the blocks to widen my collarbones keeps my upper back from rounding and lengthens my spine. This is where I am today physically, emotionally and spiritually, and I can be very thankful for that.
