It's been a wild journey since January. Between getting a car and moving it's been crazy. Now that everything has settled we want to share how all the different situations have affected Jiovanni. Despite how we thought this was going to go (prepare for the worst and hope for the best) Jiovanni has adopted incredibly well.. less temper tantrums, in bed by no later than 10:30 every night, trying different foods, saying new words and getting used to sleeping in his own bedroom... The transition has been absolutely beautiful!! Here are some pictures of his journey the past few months!

The past few weeks have been rough. Jiovanni has been battling one illness after another. After doing some research and talking to many parents from the Autism community I've finally found a vitamin to try with Jiovanni. We will be trying EllaOla shortly and will keep everyone updated on our thoughts! Here are some pictures of the past few weeks!

Today was Jiovanni's last day of school for 2024! It started of an exciting day but quickly turned when Jiovanni started crying and clinging to his teacher. She couldn't figure out why and he can't tell her. He made it through the half day and when he came home he was fussy and went to sleep due to the exhaustion from crying. Now anyone who has a non-verbal child knows how it can be frustrating and scary sometimes when your child can't tell you wants wrong. As I lay next to my boy I replayed everything the teacher told me and how he acted when he came home. It hit me out of nowhere.. his belly hurts.. he might have a gas bubble. So I took his legs.. gently moved them side to side and to his belly.. well let me tell you.. he let one rip all right.. sounded like a grown man! 🤣 Thankfully he's back to himself. Sometimes we have to slow down.. yes they may not be able to verbally tell us what's wrong but in their own way they do tell us. Kind of like a puzzle we have to observe and put the pieces together. On a much brighter note it's snowing outside for the first time this season and Jiovanni was excited and wanted to play in the snow! Being a parent of a special needs child is hard and tiring work but it sure is rewarding as well!!

It's been a while I know.. unfortunately it's been a rough month for Jiovanni and myself. Between sicknesses and crazy schedules it's been hard to find the time to do much of anything. Jiovanni is doing much better and back to himself after battling being sick back to back. He started speech therapy again with a new therapist and seems to be taking to her quickly. He even used the communication device by himself. We have been working with him on his sensory needs and keeping him calm. He has been approved for occupational therapy to assist with his sensory needs which starts next month. His diet has unfortunately gotten worse. He will only eat bread items or chips.. I have been trying to sneak some new things into this category such as french toast, sandwiches, garlic bread ext. Sometimes it's a hit and other times it's a complete miss. He has been willing to at least try them so that's a win. It's also been harder due to the holidays. A simple thing like going to the store has become harder due to the increase in people shopping. I'll get into that more on another post! To all the parents or caregivers who are going through it right now Stay strong! You are incredible and your loved one sees and appreciates you more then you know!!

Wanted to update everyone as to the past 2 weeks. It has been a crazy ride so we haven't had a chance to post. On Halloween Jiovanni was rushed to the hospital due to low oxygen and he was struggling to breathe. His lips were purple and his oxygen was in the 80's. He was scared and I was petrified but I knew that despite how scared I was I needed to stay calm so he wouldn't sense my fear and let me tell you that is not easy when it is your child. The paramedics were wonderful with him. They quickly gave him a breathing treatment and were able to keep him calm going to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital everything happened fast and it was overwhelming for myself and Jiovanni. The nurses and Drs were amazing and took the time to show Jio what they were going to do. After another breathing treatment they brought in a sensory machine to distract him and keep him calm. They were able to do another breathing treatment and give him a steroid without a fight. We were informed he had croup but he was cleared to come home. I couldn't have asked for a better team! Fast forward to this week and Jiovanni is much better. He still has a stuffy nose and a cough but he is doing great. He has finally been accepted into a speech therapy program after many months of fighting to get him seen LHVN scheduled him right away for a evaluation and no wait list so he is able to start speech the week after. Today he was fitted for a specialty stroller and a specialty car seat as well as the script being put in for a cubby bed. He also received his braces today! To all the parents who feel overwhelmed due to wait lists don't give up and always remember you are the voice for your child!! Stay strong

Jiovanni was up bright and early, excited for his first day back to school after Fall break! It's always hard to let him go but I wholeheartedly trust his school and I know his teacher is phenomenal. The biggest fear of a mom who has a non-verbal child is something happening when your not there and them not being able to tell you. Luckily his teacher is very understanding of my fears and anxiety so she texts me during the day to let me know how he's doing and even sends me pictures!! Having a open communication with the teachers is very important. Always remember it takes a village to raise a child! Teamwork is key and you are your child's biggest advocate! Never question raising a concern you have to your child's teacher! You are your child's voice!!

This weekend was full of many 1st's. Jiovanni was able to go to 2 trunk or treats without using his stroller and only having minor episodes. He also let me put paint on his face for his costume! Super proud of him for accomplishing these 2 things. Overall he had a great weekend!

Today's discussion.. Going to the store. Now don't get me wrong going to the store with any child can be chaotic but going to the store with a autistic child who gets over stimulated when in crowds is beyond chaotic. Today we went to get Jiovanni his Halloween costume and it was slightly more challenging then usual. We always bring his safe snacks, safe toys ext so while in the store his mind is not focused on the amount of people around him. When he gets over stimulated he tends to have a complete melt down and bites his hand or hits his head and the most agitating thing as a parent is the looks you get from other people who do not understand. Today as Jiovanni was having a meltdown I stepped aside so I can get down to his level and help him through his difficult moment when another parent came over and asked if I needed help and told me I was doing a great job. It felt really good to see someone understand and to take time out of their day to ask if I needed anything. After calming him down we were able to direct him to pick out his costume (which he did by himself) Sometimes all that's really needed is to know that someone else cares and to have the encouragement! If you are out and see a child having a meltdown don't judge and automatically assume the child is just having a tantrum because they didn't get their way... Or assume the parent isn't doing a good job of raising their child, instead encourage the caregiver with a simple "your doing a great job" because honestly sometimes that's all they need to hear to be able to continue through that moment!! Always remember it takes a village to raise a child! You never know how much a simple word of encouragement can help a parent who has a child with autism!!
