Here are some of my family's favorite bedtime activities to help my little one fall asleep fast!

Sometimes our babies need a little help getting all of the stress and cortisol out of their system so they can fall asleep easier. These activities will help you and your older baby do just that!

When I started thinking about weaning my three year old, the idea of a sudden stop felt… wrong.

I’d put so much love and energy into building a relationship with her, I couldn’t just take away her favorite thing. Here’s what I did instead.

Instead, I took a gentle approach. I took a slow, loving transition that honored our connection and my daughter’s needs. I was flexible with the timing and didn’t push her.

It was a roller coaster of a process, but now that we’re on the other side, I’m honestly a bit shocked at the results. She has no problem falling asleep with our new bedtime routine, and plenty of snuggles, and she typically only wakes once per night… and falls right back to sleep.

Are you like me? Ready to wean but not ready to quit cold turkey?

Those early newborn days... I remember feeling like I was constantly trying to solve a sleep puzzle.

If you're in that place right now, know you're not alone. It's so common to wonder why our babies wake so frequently.

I learned a lot about the science behind it – how human milk and our 'carry' species nature play a huge role. Understanding that made a real difference for me.

Sharing a few things that helped me get through, hoping they can offer some comfort to you too.

Night waking got you down? Here's how to cope when your baby isn't sleeping through the night!

Let's start with the positives...

Reasons to Celebrate Night Waking:
✨ Night waking is protective against SIDS
✨ Babies need to feed frequently
✨ Nursing on demand protects a feeding parent’s milk supply

Tips for handling night wakes

While babies and toddlers waking throughout the night is the norm, that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Here are my top tips for handling night waking:

🌙 Follow your baby’s sleep cues for naps and bedtimes
🌙 Keep the lighting dim and stay in the sleep area if your baby wakes
🌙 Always respond and offer to soothe your baby back to sleep
🌙 Learn to bedshare safely for those extra exhausting nights
🌙 Soothe your baby in whatever way is easiest for the whole family

When to seek professional help

Although waking at night is to be expected, there are times when you may need help. I suggest reaching out to a sleep without sleep training type of sleep specialist in the following circumstances:

❌ The amount of night waking feels unsustainable
❌ Your family is about to make a major change like a parent returning to work or starting childcare
❌ You want to make a change like moving away from rocking, walking, or bouncing to sleep
❌ You want to night wean (or don’t know when it’s the right time to do so)
❌ You notice any sleep red flags 🚩

I often think about how nights felt just a few years ago.

I would often stay sitting up in bed playing best fiends on my phone to keep myself awake while soothing my baby back to sleep.

I was...

❌ exhausted
❌ overwhelmed
❌ afraid
❌ worried

I wanted so badly to get a good night of sleep, but clearly my baby needed me.

I didn’t want to worry about keeping myself awake. I wanted to give her what she needed and sleep.

That easefulness didn’t come until I understood her sleep needs and temperament.

I wish it came sooner.

I found peace in her sleep by…

🌙Following her cues at naps and bedtimes
🌙 Learning how much sleep she actually needed
🌙 Understanding her temperament
🌙 Leaning in to her need for physical connection and comfort

Do you feel the way I felt? Do you want to feel peace at naps and nights? To feel less stressed as evening draws near?

The Sleep Club can get you there. During this month long support group you’ll have support from me and like minded parents. After, you’ll feel confident that your baby is getting the sleep that they need. You’ll walk away with connections and resources to help you continue on your sleep without sleep training journey.

5 reasons to break free from the nap-length obsession

1️⃣Every Baby is Unique: Just like adults, babies have different sleep needs. Some may thrive on short, frequent naps, while others prefer longer, fewer naps.

2️⃣Short Naps Can Be Restorative: Don't underestimate the power of a quick snooze! Short naps can help recharge your baby's energy levels and improve their mood.

3️⃣Focus on Overall Well-being: Instead of stressing over nap length, pay attention to your baby's overall behavior. Are they happy, alert, and meeting their developmental milestones?

4️⃣Follow Your Intuition: Take this opportunity to listen to your gut. Does your baby truly need longer naps? What do YOU feel your baby needs in this moment? Remember, it can change day-to-day!

5️⃣Trust Your Baby's Cues: Your baby's body knows what it needs. If they're consistently waking up from short naps feeling refreshed, there's no need to force longer sleep.

When a huge wind storm hit Washington last week, it knocked out our power and internet for 48 hours.

I was anxious and stressed. But you know? We were just fine.

Even while I took care of a toddler and all the animals on my own while my wife went to help elsewhere, I knew I had everything I needed.

I knew where our emergency supplies were and how to use them.
I had a plan for keeping my toddler warm all day and night.
We had to adjust what we ate, but we had plenty.
Bedtime was quite different, but my toddler was so tired from the exciting day that it wasn’t an issue.

The next time a storm hits, I know we'll be ready.

What have you done differently to prepare for emergencies some having a baby? Let us know in the comments!

How to Thrive with a Newborn

Prepare your space for feeding and bonding with your new baby. Near your favorite chair or couch spot make space for...

🍎 healthy snacks
🍶 a water bottle
🤱 burp cloths
🌙 a blanket for your and baby
📱 a cell phone charger
📚 maybe even a book or your kindle

You're going to be spending a lot of time in this space and you'll want everything within reach.

Talk to your family and friends about what kind of support you do or do not want. If you don't have family or friends available to help, consider hiring a postpartum doula. Check your insurance - many providers will reimburse all or some of the expense of a doula.

Work with a lactation consultant to set realistic feeding goals and create a backup plan. This might include harvesting colostrum during pregnancy or choosing a formula with a backup option.

Spending time with your newborn is magical... and it can also feel uncomfortably slow. Know that every minute you spend holding, cuddling, and feeding your new baby is building their lifelong mental health. ! The dishes and other chores can wait... when you are holding your baby, you are exactly where you need to be.
