Chronic joint pain is a result of inflammation. There can be one or more sources of inflammation causing chronic joint pain for an individual. Each person may have different triggers of inflammation depending on their genetic predisposition and their body’s response to their diet, lifestyle, and environment.
Diet and lifestyle play more of a role in the development of chronic joint pain conditions than most people think. This can provide hope to individuals committed to doing investigative work to identify and remove triggers of inflammation and pain. When modifying diet and lifestyle behaviors that are contributing to joint issues, the body is provided conditions to support decreased inflammation, decreased pain, and healing. This is an opt-in model of self-care where the individual is deciding to take control of their own health and not a traditional disease-based model where a diagnosis is made and medications or surgery are prescribed.
How do you know what factors are at work for you when you have chronic joint pain? Well, sure, there are some general things you can do to address diet, sleep habits, exercise, stress management, and supplementation. However, for some individuals, this is just not specific enough to address what underlying triggers, called hidden stressors, may be at work in their body. For example, imbalances in hormones, immune function, digestion, detoxification pathways, energy production, oxidative stress, and the autonomic nervous system can all contribute to chronic joint issues. Once the imbalances are uncovered, a more targeted approach may help a client rebalance their body.
This is where having a functional practitioner can help you to do the detective work to identify your specific triggers. Specialized functional lab testing not used by traditional providers can help to uncover hidden causes of inflammation and joint pain. As a functional practitioner, I help my clients with access to in-home functional lab testing to uncover the hidden triggers of their inflammation and pain. Then, after comparing the results with their detailed self-reported assessment, I help them with a personalized protocol to help them rebalance their bodies and provide resources and ongoing coaching support.
While there is no guarantee that all the exact causes of joint dysfunction and pain will be found, most often the clues provided by functional lab testing can be helpful. Applying wellness principles and managing identified stressors can significantly impact overall health and well-being by helping the body to rebalance and work the way it’s supposed to.
My mission is to help mid-life committed, optimistic, family-focused individuals who’ve hit a wall with joint pain, to turn it around naturally so that they can feel better (less pain), move better (less stiffness, less inflammation, increased flexibility), and live better (less stress, increased hope, and engagement in life).
