Modeling Beats Telling

Ever tell your toddler something 47 times… and nothing changes?
Here’s the secret: kids learn more from what we DO than what we SAY.

That’s why “Watch me first” often works better than a thousand instructions. Their brains are built to copy—it’s how they learn best.

Try this at home (today):
✅ Instead of “Be gentle with the dog,” show gentle.
Softly pet the dog and say: “Gentle touch.” Then pause so they can copy.

✅ Instead of “Say please,” model it out loud:
“Mommy says, ‘Please may I have a snack?’” …then wait and let them try.
Small shift → big results: less repeating, more learning.

💬 Question for parents: What phrase do you feel like you repeat ALL day?

Terminology Tuesday: Developmental Milestones

✨ Developmental milestones are a practical way to understand early development. Children don’t all grow on the same timeline — but skills often follow predictable patterns within a range.

Milestones aren’t tests and they’re not predictions. They’re helpful guideposts that support parents and professionals in noticing strengths, identifying areas that may need support, and deciding when it’s worth taking a closer look.

Examples of milestones may include:
• Pointing or using words to communicate
• Sharing attention during play
• Learning movements like walking or climbing
• Solving simple problems during play
• Participating in daily routines

What matters most isn’t whether a child does a skill once—it’s how consistently they use it in everyday life.

✅ A helpful (and free) resource many families use is the CDC Milestone Tracker App, which includes illustrated checklists, tips, and the option to share a summary with a child’s care team

If something feels off, asking questions early is about support — not labels. Early Intervention focuses on learning through play and daily routines.

Terminology Tuesday : Reinforcement

Reinforcement is anything that happens after a behavior that increases the chance of that behavior happening again in the future .It’s important to know: reinforcement isn’t automatically praise or rewards. Those only count if the behavior actually increases over time.

Everyday examples:
• When a child communicates and gets what they need → communication grows
• When asking for help makes a task easier → asking happens more often

Try this at home:
1️⃣ Choose one skill you want to see more of (asking for help, using words or gestures, starting play)
2️⃣ Decide how you’ll respond right away (help, join in, give access, or simplify the task)
3️⃣ Watch what increases — that’s what’s motivating
In ABA, we focus on positive reinforcement and motivation to build meaningful skills like communication, social interaction, and play.

Terminology Tuesday: Teach What TO Do Instead

Imagine someone drops you in the middle of Tokyo, hands you a map in Japanese, and yells:
“GET TO THE AIRPORT!” And then they’re shocked when you freeze.

That’s what it can feel like for kids when we say “stop screaming” or “stop hitting”—without showing them what to do instead. Most of the time, they’re not being “bad”… they’re using the only tools they have.

✨ Try this at home (Snack example):
If your child screams for a snack, don’t only say “no screaming.” Teach the replacement skill:

Model the words when they’re calm:
“When I want a snack, I say ‘snack please’… or I can point.”
Practice it during a neutral moment (not during the meltdown).
When they start escalating, prompt the exact replacement:
“Say ‘snack please’” or “Show me which one.”
Celebrate attempts, even if it’s not perfect yet. Progress counts.

Because behavior changes faster when kids learn what works.

💬 Parent question: What’s the #1 behavior you’d love a “replacement skill” for right now—screaming, hitting, whining, or something else?
