Black History Month is the perfect time to celebrate the remarkable contributions of Black pioneers in eye care and optometry, whose impact has shaped the field in profound ways.
Trailblazers like Dr. William H. Lawson, a dedicated advocate for diversity in optometry, and Dr. H. Edward Welton, who helped pave the way for future generations, have left a lasting legacy. Dr. Bess Coleman, the first Black female optometrist, and Dr. Paula Newsome, a leader in advancing eye health and education, have inspired countless professionals while improving patient care.
These individuals, along with so many others, have broken barriers, uplifted communities, and advanced the science of vision care. This month, we honor their achievements and innovation in eye health.
