Labor can feel mysterious, especially if you’re a first-time mom. One of the most common questions is: “Why are there so many monitors?”

Understanding what’s typical can help you feel calmer and more confident when the time comes.

During labor, your care team monitors both you and your baby to make sure everything is progressing safely.
Here are some common types of monitoring you may see:

👶 Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring
This tracks your baby’s heartbeat during labor. It helps providers see how your baby is tolerating contractions and the birth process.

📈 Contraction Monitoring
A sensor placed on your belly measures the timing and strength of contractions so your care team can see labor patterns.

💓 Maternal Vital Signs
Your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature may be checked regularly to ensure your body is handling labor well.

🛏 Intermittent Checks
Depending on your birth plan and provider, monitoring may be continuous or checked periodically throughout labor.

🗣️ Communication Matters
Your care team should explain what each monitor does and why it’s being used. It’s always okay to ask questions and stay informed.

Labor isn’t just something that happens to you, you’re an active part of the process. Understanding what’s normal can help reduce anxiety and build confidence for the big day.

👉 Save this if you’re preparing for birth.

I’m excited to announce my graduation from the Doula Unbound certification course! Doula Unbound is a first-of-its-kind training program for birth doulas led by Dr. Bill Chun, a board-certified OBGYN with over 35 years experience.

This training and all I’ve learned so far has increased my knowledge base and enhanced my understanding of pregnancy, labor, and birth to better serve my clients throughout their pregnancies and beyond.

Induction to prevent shoulder dystocia is not evidence‑based
Multiple high‑quality reviews show no consistent reduction in shoulder dystocia when labor is induced just because a baby is suspected to be big.

AAFP review:
“Results from studies evaluating labor induction for suspected macrosomia are inconsistent, and induction is not recommended to prevent shoulder dystocia.”

Cochrane review:
Ultrasound weight estimates are inaccurate, and early induction for suspected big babies does not reliably prevent shoulder dystocia.

Most shoulder dystocia happens with normal‑sized babies
This is the stat your graphic is built on — and it’s solid.

AAFP:
“Half of the neonates with shoulder dystocia weighed less than 4,000 g (8 lb 13 oz), and only 20% of patients had diabetes.”
Translation: Small and average‑sized babies get stuck too.

Cleveland Clinic:
Shoulder dystocia occurs in 0.6–1.4% of babies 5 lb 8 oz–8 lb 13 oz — normal weight range.
It rises to 5–9% only in babies >8 lb 13 oz.
But the majority of cases still occur in normal‑weight babies because they are far more common.
