Gym mats become mold reservoirs because they create the perfect microclimate for trapped moisture, reduced drying, and organic contamination.

The biggest issue is usually not the mat itself — it’s the environment the mat creates underneath it.

So how can you use them while still trying to prevent mold? Here’s my go-to for best practices:

🦠 Keep indoor humidity ideally around 40–50%

🦠Never trap rubber mats over damp concrete

🦠Use breathable underlayments when possible

🦠Periodically lift and inspect mats

🦠Allow air circulation underneath

🦠Dry mop instead of soaking floors

🦠Use dehumidification in garages/basements

🦠Avoid wall-to-wall impermeable gym flooring if moisture issues exist

For high-performance healthy homes, better options would be:

-removable mats
-ventilated subfloor systems
-cork/rubber hybrids
-interlocking systems with airflow channels

instead of fully sealed rubber flooring.

This client was sent to me by her doctor after years of health issues.

Molly tagged the area directly behind the bed which we later learned was on the opposite side of a water heater leak from 2 years ago. The client was under the impression that the company they hired to remediate it had done the proper steps to address mold prevention and water clean up by suctioning the water out of the carpet and putting in fans and dehumidifiers. The problem is, it only takes mold 24-48 hours to go in the right conditions. Carpet, glue, baseboards, and drywall are the perfect mold food when water damage occurs.

Wet materials should be removed after a water event. Period.

Medical gaslighting at its finest. This text thread is from another mom, she is fighting the same battle I am. Shes in Kentucky. This needs to stop. We need to gather other kiddos and families going through this and bring this to a hospitals attention.

My sweet Nathan is in metabolic acidosis. He was born with the ACADS gene which is the Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorder called SCAD. It impairs the way your body produces energy.

He was sick Monday-Thursday with small fevers and cold-like symptoms but nothing came back so they said it was viral. He went back to school Friday and begged me to play in his soccer game today. I KNEW I shouldn’t let him. I knew. But he wanted to so bad. After his game he crashed. Got tired. Wouldn’t eat or drink. While I was freaking out about the ants in the house and looking around with my scope I walked into the living room and he was asleep on the couch and pale as could be. He had a temp, and when I got him to bed, he threw up. For anyone who knows about metabolics, this is not a good thing.

We are currently at OU Children’s getting the only protocol we know of and it seems to be helping. He’s thrown up more since getting here but is showing progress since getting an IV and zofran.

The ER doc asked why we don’t have a full blown team for him and I looked at him and laughed. I explained the pushback from the geneticist here at OU and how he said Nathan’s gene “isn’t a thing” even though it came back positive 🧐

So I was told to find a team. So, does anyone out here in the Instagram world have suggestions to a GOOD metabolic clinic who specializes in FAODs like SCAD (which is extremely rare). Suggestions are very welcome. We are tired of this fight. 9 years of this. This kiddo deserves a break and a protocol beyond just what I’ve studied myself. The healthcare system is so broken. I pray that changes.

Also, to anyone who messages me over the next few days. please bear with me. I love the work I get to do to help each of you, but ultimately I’m a mom who is deeply obsessed with my job as mom first and foremost. Thank you for being understanding while we work to bring Nathans body back to normal levels. 🙏🏻

From wooden windows with a small leak, and jetted tubs with water spilling out the door, to previously “remediated” hot water tank behind this wall Molly had a busy day of protecting these clients from hidden mold in their home.

Molly girl did so good today. Lots of tags we were able to confirm with the scope.

I love these confirmations because it lets me know that she’s not false alerting and that she’s really helping the community with her little nose.

When I got home from work today, my son asked “how did Molly do today?” and it’s so cool to say “well, she found mold next to a little boys bed who was sick from mold. Now they can remediate and he can get better all bc of Molly’s nose.”

Gosh I love this ministry/work. 🥰

Carpets and illness don’t mix well. Not only do they hold on to dust, molds, etc., but also bacteria. And if you spill or have accidents on carpet, it doesn’t take long for the pad to lock in that moisture.

Concrete and tile are the way to go! Rugs can be replaced easily.

Killing mold isn’t the goal. ❌

Both live and dead mold spores can affect your health.
✔️ Viable spores = can grow under the right conditions
✔️ Non-viable spores = can’t grow… but can still cause harm

Here’s where it gets tricky 👇

🔬 Microscopy can detect spores…but can’t tell if they’re alive or dead

🧫 Petri dish (culture) tests can grow viable spores…but not all viable spores will grow in lab conditions

👉 Translation: No single test tells the whole story which is why testing is only one piece of the puzzle.

And more importantly…“dead mold” isn’t harmless.

That’s why the goal is never to kill mold…it’s to remove it.

Want to learn more about nonculturable testing methods like air testing, tape lifts, swabs, and MSQPCR (ERMI) sampling?
