Sleep matters โ especially for growing kids. ๐ด๐
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the more serious end of a spectrum called sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) โ which can range from simple snoring to true airway obstruction. Not every snore is OSA, and proper diagnosis by a physician (with a sleep study) is essential.
Hereโs what parents should know:
โจ Pediatric dentists and Orthodontists can help with early screening and risk assessment.
โจ A sleep study (polysomnography) + clinical symptoms is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA.
โจ Many children outgrow mild OSA as they enter adolescence โ but not all do. Boys and children with excess weight may be at higher risk of persistence.
โจ There is no evidence that braces, expanders, extractions, CBCT scans, tongue-tie releases, or functional appliances can prevent sleep apnea.
โจ Increasing airway size on imaging does not automatically mean breathing function improves.
โจ Treatment decisions should be individualized and medically guided โ not based on trends or fear.
๐ก The most effective care happens when pediatricians, sleep specialists, ENTs, and orthodontists work together.
If your child snores loudly, struggles with restless sleep, mouth breathes, or seems overly tired during the day, discuss it with your pediatrician. Early evaluation matters โ but evidence-based care matters even more.
Healthy sleep = healthy growth, focus, and smiles. ๐๐ฆท
