Today is the first day of Chinese New Year, specifically the Year of the Fire Horse, which symbolizes bold, energetic freedom and forward momentum. 🐴🐲🎏🎇

Our team celebrated by handing out fortune cookies and red cards to write New Year wishes. 🥠 🧧

Tara Knowles, Manager of Patient Care Services, spoke with the team about how the Chinese community has contributed to healthcare innovations.

Tara adopted her daughter Allie from China 17 years ago. Many of us know Allie as a Sentara volunteer and apprentice in our nursing program, but it was an honor to listen to her speak about her heritage and what the Chinese New Year is all about.

“’Hotel de la SAMC’ would not have run without our team who braved the roads, stayed over at the hospital, and helped keep things running smoothly,” said Carrie Buck, Emergency Department Director. ❄️ ⛄ ☕

Buck added that it was truly special to spend quality time together in the “snow breakroom, warming up with a hot beverage, sharing stories and laughs, and supporting one another.

📢 Medical Office Building Diagnostic Center - Hours Update

Due to expected blizzard‑like conditions in NE NC, the MOB Diagnostic Center (lab & imaging) will be:

- Closed for walk‑ins Saturday & Sunday
- Opening at 12 PM Monday and closing at 5 PM
- Scheduled imaging patients have been notified.
- For physician office visits, please contact your doctor’s office.

Today, our team came together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Phyllis Griffin, senior laboratory technologist who has served SAMC for 38 years, reminded us that Dr. King’s message still guides us to lead with love, recognize the humanity in every person, and stay committed to building a community grounded in dignity and respect.

Our president, Teresa Watson, closed the ceremony by reflecting on our shared responsibility to live out these values each day through compassion, justice, and service to others.

As we paused together, we reflected on one of Dr. King’s most powerful truths: “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

Today and every day, we honor Dr. King’s legacy through the way we care for one another and the communities we serve.

What’s cooking in the Teaching Kitchen? 🍴

At Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, we believe health starts long before a hospital visit. That’s why we partnered with the Food Bank of the Albemarle to bring hands-on nutrition classes to our community.

From turkey tacos to healthy apple crisps, participants are learning how small changes can make a big impact on overall wellness.

Our old hospital is still making a difference! 💙

When Sentara Albemarle moved to its new home, we made sure the former facility continued to serve our neighbors.

✅ More than $82,000 in donations went to local organizations!
🥫 The Salvation Army Thrift Store of Elizabeth City opened a new food pantry
🍽 Soul’s Kitchen got freezers, refrigerators, tables, and chairs to support daily operations
🎖 Gates County High School received desks, tables, and racks with the large majority going to their new ROTC building.
📚 And we provided support to College of The Albemarle, United Way of Albemarle, Kingdom of Life Church, and the South Mills Community Center.

We’re proud to keep caring for our community, inside and outside the hospital walls. 💪

🎄💚 Holiday cheer delivered! Our team packed 51 Christmas Angel Tree stockings filled with goodies—crayons, candy, mini Legos, stuffed animals, and more—for students across the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools ECPPS.

A big thank you to our amazing team for spreading joy and to ECPPS counselors for helping us share the love this Christmas!
