New in the On Being series! 📝

Just published "On Being Rooted," exploring the paradoxes of the nervous system; how the same pathway that helps us hold can also force us to let go.

It starts with p*e. Ends with roots. In between: bodily surrenders, duckweed wisdom, BaeBaeKitty (feline familiar), and the quiet revolution of a body that finally stops running long enough to feel held.

This one's longer than usual because root systems don't rush and some truths refuse to surface without time.

Read it here:

How the body lets go, either in trust or in terror. On the vagus nerve, nervous system paradoxes, and the quiet intelligence of our deepest roots.

New on Substack: "Dancing While Broken: Rumi's Guide to Conscious Suffering"

I found Rumi not in some Instagram-worthy spiritual bookshop, but in a public library while homeless. His words hit differently when read on furniture you don't own, in a building that closes before dark.

"Dance, when you're broken open. Dance, if you've torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood."

Most spiritual guidance offers elaborate avoidance strategies. Meditation so you won't feel your feelings. Affirmations to paper over wounds. Gratitude instead of grief.

Rumi offers something more radical: not a way around suffering, but a way through it. Not transcendence of pain, but transformation within it.

There's wisdom in the saying that life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain...

The Buddhist perspective is that our present mental, moral, intellectual, and emotional circumstances are the direct result of our actions and habits, both past and present. How we choose to respond when confronted with pain or discomfort will change our ability to skillfully deal with suffering when it arises. We can also take solace in the fact that we’re not alone, that every person has difficult and unpleasant experiences. It’s how we respond to pain that determines our experience.

“There’s a line in the Tao that says, ‘Truth waits for the eye unclouded by longing.’
As long as you want something, you see only the outward container, and our desire to keep the game going makes it very hard for us to see what in fact is happening.
And I really feel much more that my life is at play as a mystery. Rather than something where I know how it comes out. I mean, I find, ‘I don’t know’ is the best response I have to most of the kinds of profound questions people ask me. It keeps me open right at the edge of something I don’t really understand, and yet I don’t have to.” -Ram Dass
