We don’t need a cure for Autism, we need a cure for ABLEISM 💥

Autism is a natural and valid variation in the way some brains are wired. It’s not something to be “fixed” or “treated” — it’s something to be understood, accepted, and celebrated.

Autistic people don’t need pity. They don’t need to be molded to fit neurotypical standards. What they do need is respect, access to resources, accommodations, and community. They need to know that their value is not dependent on their ability to play baseball, write a poem, or pay taxes.

Ableism is the real problem — the systems, assumptions, and attitudes that say neurodivergent people are less-than, broken, or a burden.

At Perennial SLP, our goal is to make the world a better place by providing neuro-affirming communication and feeding therapy. That means making space for communication differences, sensory needs, and the rich, dynamic ways that Autistic people experience the world. It means unlearning the ableist idea that there is one “right” way to think, feel, or interact. So, going forward..
💡 Let’s amplify Autistic voices.
🌱 Let’s embrace neurodiversity.
🔥 Let’s create a world where ALL minds are valued.

Please, please, please — let’s prove the research right!

A systematic review found that high intensity interventions (2-3 times per week) were the most effective way to improve speech sound production. The number of trials (50 to 100 per session) was also very important in making progress.

That’s why we structured our Summer Speech Groups to meet twice per week — hint hint! 😉

Our take? The more language, the better -- your kids' brains can handle it!

Some multilingual children may appear to have reduced vocabulary sizes at first, but research shows that they typically have the same number of words in their vocabulary -- they are just spread across multiple languages, so each language has fewer words in its vocabulary set.

It is also important to remember that bilingual children may mix
words or grammar from both languages within a sentence. This is not a sign of confusion or a reason to worry -- it's very normal in bilingual language development, and later in life is called "code-switching!"

Wondering why we rarely sit at a table during therapy sessions, especially with young children? It's because movement HELPS kids learn language, and also keeps therapy fun and exciting!

This article in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research was one of the first to examine the link between aerobic exercise (marching, skipping, jumping jacks) and word learning in young children.

This is consistent with previous research which found that aerobic exercise can boost vocabulary learning, and suggests that this might be true for children with and without language delays.

Talk Yoga™ combines evidence-based speech and language principles with the benefits of the ancient practice of yoga poses, breathing, and mindfulness strategies. It can help children learn to express themselves in an inclusive, client-centered environment where they are free to explore, to express, to play, and to learn!

DIR stands for the Developmental, Individual-Differences, and Relationship-Based (DIR) approach developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan.

DIR is a framework for understanding development and DIRFloortime® (aka Floortime) is the application of this framework into practice.

The concepts in this graphic correspond to the first five "Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities" (FEDCs) of social and emotional development in the DIRFloortime model, which are the foundation for an individual's learning and development.

It's important to remember that all individuals develop in their own time and neurodivergent development often appears nonlinear. Each stage may look very different from one individual to another and individuals may experience different capacities throughout the day.

Strong relationships are the foundation for Floortime sessions. We focus on supporting the individual's unique needs and preferences so that they can move from one capacity to the next at their own pace, leveraging their interests, passions, and intrinsic motivation to learn.

Even though our Floortime Playgroup is for kids ages 2-4, this approach can be adapted for individuals of any age!
