As the Christmas season creeps up on us, we want to recognize and celebrate the holiday spirit that Mrs. Shirley Erwin embodied. Mrs. Shirley Erwin was a resident of Christian Care of Unicoi County who admitted to our Rehabilitation Center to participate in our inpatient program following a decline in function.

With the understanding that Mrs. Erwin had a long road in front of her due to her non-weight status on her lower extremity, she entered therapy with an open mind. Mrs. Erwin established consistency with efforts to improve function with the help of therapy services provided by Physical and Occupational Therapy. Mrs. Erwin focused on mobility of her lower extremities, the advancement of stability and strength with tasks directed for the improvement of muscle endurance, strength, and dynamic stability. With diligent work and effort of each therapist and nursing staff, Mrs. Erwin efforts yielded significant improvements in the ability to complete functional task, safe transfer from various surfaces, and ambulation with increased weight bearing during her stay.

With the completion of therapy and met goals, Mrs. Erwin demonstrated overwhelming joyfulness at the chance to return home. She states upon completion of therapy that the department of Physical and Occupational therapy was so great and awesome. She continues to state that it got me to walk again. The celebration of Advent is an ancient Christian practice that focuses on the true reason for the season, Jesus Christ. Join us as we celebrate Advent each week through Scripture with the following words on each Sunday till Christmas Eve:

Hope - November 30
Peace - December 7
Joy - December 14
Love - December 21

Week 1 : Hope

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. […] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

Isaiah 9:2, 6-7
