After growing up in an extremely high control religion, I can speak first hand to the trauma that it left me with even years after walking away.

If this resonates with you- I want you to know that you are not alone. Even in practice, we make it clear that we are not anti-religion nor anti-faith. Many individuals involved with religion and religious institutions do great work within the community.

However, this is aimed at those who may not have had this experience. In places where control, fear, or abuse are the main tactics in maintaining power over others. Even as an innocent bystander who may be witnessing these things happen to others.

If you or a loved one is experiencing trauma related to religion, I encourage you to reach out. The trauma does not have to dominate your life.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (D.B.T.) has a core skill called "Radical Acceptance". Radical Acceptance is fully accepting reality as it is, without judgement or resistance, even if it is painful or unwanted.

It is about owning what we cannot change to free up energy and create a space for healing, self-compassion, and effective action.

Instead of "Why me?" or "This is completely unfair." It is not about approval or giving up, but understanding that we cannot change what we do not accept.

Allow yourself to acknowledge and feel and observe while remaining mindful.

I hope these Radical Acceptance flowers bring you compassion and peace as we go into the new year.

As we roll into the new year I wanted to take a moment and re-introduce myself and services. I am Colby Odom a licensed Social Worker who is trained in play therapy. I am currently in the last 5 months of a 24 month training (Post Master's level) to become a Registered Play Therapist! I have experience in many areas including Oklahoma Child Welfare, Hospice & Palliative Care, and Community Mental Health.

I have worked with child abuse, homicide, su***de, severe mental illness and everything in between. I am so passionate about helping my community deal with trauma and pain. My grandmother worked as police dispatcher in the Broken Arrow district and my mother is currently on her 26th year as a Child Welfare Supervisor with Oklahoma Human Services. If there's one thing my family understands, it is the impact of trauma and the way it can change a community. I come from a long line of community advocates.

One of the best ways for children to deal with trauma, abuse, and neglect is by using therapeutic play with a licensed professional. We use games, toys, art, and other methods to help treat children who may have a variety of needs. After all, play is how kids talk to us.

I am currently on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Association of Play Therapy and provide services in Muskogee and McIntosh County. I provide services in many of the schools in the surrounding area and would love to introduce myself and provide these services for you and your family.

If you have questions about these services or adult therapy, please give me a call and it would be my honor to help.
