" See that tiny pink bead on the lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect super food for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's liquid gold! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families."

Flashback Friday, birth edition. Let's see those birth photos!

This isn't my photo, it is a stunning capture of a baby en caul (born in their amniotic sack) by photographer Leilani Parente Rogers. There are also two hands up by the head, this is called nuchal hands. Such a great shot!

Let’s talk about something I hear all the time ... it’s usually told as some sort of joke, but there is an edge of truth and real fear in it ... when it comes from birthing people it usually is something like... “well, we want to save SOME of the romance in our marriage ... he doesn’t need to be THAT involved, if you know what I mean...” meaning that she doesn’t want her partner to be shocked or even “grossed out” by seeing their baby being born. Partners have their own version of this joke. But let me tell you, from a person who has attended hundreds of births, there is nothing more romantic you can do than have someone’s baby... birthing people have this glow that one only gets when oxytocin is flowing.... and the look of honest admiration that partners get it absolutely priceless. .....We have been sold an idea that we have to remain mysterious, and our beauty is for the consumption of others, defined by others ... but let me tell you that there is nothing more beautiful than the raw vulnerable sacrifice a mother makes... it’s undeniable, and visible in the way he looks at you.
