IT’S RACE WEEK! We are so excited for this weekend and can’t wait to see everyone at packet pickup and the day of the race.

We wanted to take a moment to address our race guidelines in the current climate.

We will have disposable masks in race bags and runners will need to wear masks at the starting line. We will have waste receptacles a little past the start once runners start spacing out. Runners are only required to wear masks at the start of the race, masks can be removed once runners start spacing out.

We will have small water bottles at the finish line. There will not be any water at the turnaround point.

When we started the Heckman Ovarian Cancer Foundation in 2014 we set out to provide financial help to those in the CRSA with ovarian cancer. Building a community and a providing a safe space for those affected by ovarian cancer, their families and friends has always been a goal of ours and we’re so excited to continue to build our community up!

One of our goals for is to keep hope alive. Battling or watching a loved one battle is one of the hardest things and it’s easy to feel hopeless. All of the proceeds from our race go to the Heckman Ovarian Cancer Foundation to help woman financially with their fight. It’s our goal to make their battle a little easier.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month! And since we postponed our race til January we wanted to have a little giveaway to celebrate and help spread awareness! The American Cancer Society estimates in the US, about 21,750 women will receive a diagnosis for ovarian cancer this year! Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer death among woman and accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. A woman’s risk of getting ovarian cancer in her life time is 1 in 78. And her chances of dying from it are 1 in 108. The rate of which woman are diagnosed with ovarian cancer has been slowly falling over the past 20 years and we hope that it will continue to decline with more research!

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we’re giving away 1 registration ticket to our race, TEAL THERE’S A CURE 5K, for January 30, 2021 in Evans, GA.

The ribbons are here!!! BIG thanks to Michelle Heckman for taking the time to not only make but, deliver, them. They are available in teal, white, or unpainted so you can decorate them. They cost $50.00 and will be used to decorate the course. We will be giving a prize the the best one.

After much consideration, we have decided to postpone the inaugural due to the restrictions on events because of covid-19. We want to ensure everyone’s safety while also having a great time at our 5k and bringing more awareness to and helping those in need. After reviewing our options we decided to postpone the date of our race until JANUARY 30, 2021. We are hopeful that by then we will be able to provide the best race possible for everyone. In the mean time we hope everyone stays safe and continues to take care of themselves and their loved ones. We look forward to seeing y’all then and will continue to post updates on our race.

Today, June 20, Sharon Heckman would have been 76 years old. Instead she was taken too soon from loved ones by at the age of 53. Sharon Heckaman and all the woman who lost their battle to ovarian cancer inspire us to do better, be better and bring more awareness to ovarian cancer.
