We love this movement and are honored to help bring the “I Gave Birth” initiative to our community.
The “I Gave Birth” bracelet is given to new mothers to wear from birth up to 12 months postpartum. It’s part of a community-wide effort to improve maternal outcomes through increased awareness, early recognition, and timely treatment of postpartum complications such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and blood clots.
While this initiative is still in its early stages, Nurturing Mama is committed to bringing this life-saving awareness to Southwest Indiana. In 2025, Indiana ranked 3rd worst in the nation for maternal morbidity, and the United States continues to have one of the highest maternal morbidity rates among developed countries.
Nearly two out of every three pregnancy-related deaths occur within the first 42 days postpartum—the most critical part of the “fourth trimester.” During this window, education, awareness, and support can make all the difference. The CDC reports that up to 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.
The “I Gave Birth” initiative focuses on increasing awareness and access to resources when risk is highest and support is often limited. Many community members—and even healthcare providers outside of OB care—may not recognize postpartum warning signs. Expanding this knowledge is a key step in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity.
The bracelet serves as a visible reminder to the mother of potential warning signs and alerts medical personnel that she is recently postpartum. Small, intentional steps like this can create meaningful change—and save lives.
We recognize some mothers may choose not to participate for personal reasons—and we fully support you. Every mother’s journey is valid. Our goal is simply to provide education, awareness, and support so every family has the opportunity for a safer, healthier postpartum experience.
