I got this in a text message this morning from a group I’m in and the text said “in case overwhelm has crept its way into your week”.

God’s timing is amazing. Overwhelmed is exactly what I went to bed and woke up feeling. This has been an emotionally and mentally exhausting week. My desk is a disaster (which is very unlike me!), my to-do list just seemed to get longer each day, and at every turn it felt like something else was showing up for me to stress over. Last year I worked really hard to focus on God’s promise of providing perfect peace and I came a long way in overcoming my tendency to stress and then get overwhelmed and shut down… but this week has been a struggle.

So I’m leaning into this reminder today. I’m tackling my “to-do” list with prayer and reverence, recognizing His hand in everything I do, resting in the safety of His wings, giving my best and leaving results up to Him.

In the words of Anna from Frozen… I’m just doing the next right thing.

The boys got The Game of Life for Christmas and my goodness has it brought me joy this week!

Whether it’s been joy through laughter: the first time we played they were cracking up at the fact that they had to get married. Then Kaycen named his dog Lucas, one of his kids Jack, and his other child Bonroy 🤷‍♀️😂

Or joy from seeing how much they’re growing and learning: it’s been awesome seeing Bryden use his math skills as we play!

Or even joy from memories: When we were dating Marcus and I played a lot of board games at the kitchen table in my mom’s house… including Life!

The Game of Life has brought joy to my real life this week and it’s reminding me that even though the heaviness and hard parts of real life often try to steal our joy if we can slow down enough press into the laughter and silliness, the growth and learning, and even the memories then we can take that joy back… even in the hard. ❤️

Tried a new recipe today and it was delicious!!! It seems like most people have strong opinions one way or the other about sweet potatoes so I have to ask: love ‘em or hate ‘em?

I workout consistently for a number of reasons but one of the biggest ones is to set an example. I just asked Bryden to name two things I do every day and his immediate response was “Bible study and work out“. Both of those things I do for myself, because I’m better when I do them. But both of those are also habits I pray my boys will pick up… I want them to think of their spiritual and physical fitness as normal and essential. I don’t share this to say “go me“… I have definitely not always succeeded at this… but to remind you that taking care of yourself is not selfish. Little eyes are watching and often learning far more from what you do than what you say… like it or not our actions tell our kids what’s most important to us. Thank goodness it’s never too late to create better habits!

I never used to like October. It’s cold and gloomy and so, so wet. October has always felt so *blah* to me.

But over the last few years I’ve been realizing the power of perspective. I’ve noticed how a small shift in my attitude or mindset can make a huge shift in my reality. And so this morning, on this first day of October, I looked around.

I was snuggled in my favorite chair, underneath a blanket, drinking tea… and I realized that the coldness of October allows for coziness.

I looked out the window at the field in front of the house completely covered in fog and saw the dew sparkling on the grass… and I realized that the gloominess of October is actually kind of pretty.

I thought about this wet season and remembered how much fun the boys had yesterday spending a couple of hours at the park in the pouring down rain with friends… and I realized that the wetness of October provides opportunity for fun memories.

And then I grabbed my copy of Anne of Green Gables (one of my all-time favorite stories) and started reading because there’s nothing quite like reading a favorite book-in a favorite chair-under a cozy blanket-with a cup of tea-while looking at the foggy scene outside.

And so, with a little perspective shift, I think I can honestly say, like my kindred spirit Anne, that I’m so glad I live in a world where there are October’s.

Christian brothers and sister, don’t miss this 👇

““But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. Do to others as you would like them to do to you. “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:27-36‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Oh my sweet silly Kaycen.

Five years old today and I can’t let the day go without telling you how much I love you! You came into the world fast and furious, spent your first year of life as the most chill baby ever, and then turned into a bundle of energy that hasn’t slowed down. You have often made me feel like a first-time mom as you push me and challenge me in ways your big brother never did… but you also bring joy and light and silliness to our family in a way that only you could!

It’s such a blessing to be your mama and watch you grow. The first thing you said when you woke up today was “mama, don’t worry, 5 year olds still snuggle their mamas. And I still fit on your lap, see?!?!”… sweet boy I love watching you grow, and I pray you’re never to old for at least a quick snuggle. I love you buddy ❤️

I said yes… and I’m so glad I did.

Yesterday morning I told the boys we were meeting friends at Point Ruston to play on the playground and on the splash pad. They asked if I was going to wear my swimsuit and get wet and my instant reaction was to say no… but something made me pause. And in that moment I remember something I heard once about how, as a parent, there are going to be a lot of things you have to say no to for safety reasons or health reason or whatever… and because of that you should say yes when you can. I realized that there was really no reason at all for me not to get wet. So I said yes. The look on their faces alone when I said yes was worth it.

And so, when we were there I got wet. Soaked. And we laughed and laughed and had the best time. And it wasn’t hard and it wasn’t challenging. And I almost missed it. I almost missed that opportunity to laugh and smile and bring joy to my boys.

I’m so glad I paused. I’m so glad I said yes. What have you said “yes” to lately? I want to hear about your “yes” moments!
