If we are protecting ourselves we cannot truly receive love or give it as we do not believe we are deserving of it. There are so many ways we learned to protect ourselves so we would not lose love. That can look like holding on really tightly, grasping, needing or it can look like pushing away, avoiding or super-independence. It all leads us back to the same place- feeling undeserving, and even deeper, fear of abandonment. When we can see in our most intimate relationships that there are just two people wanting love and yet trying to get love with our fear “protectors” on, there can be an opening, a crack in the pain cycle that can lead to love… if you’re able to allow it. The other person isn’t trying to hurt you, they are hurting and don’t know how to feel loved.
