Increasing life jacket wear by only 20 percent would have saved 1,721 out of 3,047 boaters involved in accidents between 2008 and 2011, scientists say, a finding that could be used to argue for regulations requiring use of the safety devices.

Just got off the computer after an hour long WebEx with the Red Cross.
I have been in Water Safety for 35 years and I have never heard the statement that drowning is the number two cause of unintentional deaths in children 4 and under, with number one being birth defects. Automobile accidents were always the number one cause of unintentional deaths in children. With the overall drowning rates declining, I have to believe that car seats and other safety futures in modern cars actually work.

"While drownings, both fatal and nonfatal, have been declining for decades in the United States, they remain the second leading cause of injury-related deaths, after motor vehicle accidents, of children of all ages. In an overwhelming majority of cases, these tragedies are preventable if youngsters and their guardians have greater respect for the water and take well-established precautions." Jane Brody/New York Times

While drownings have been declining for decades in the United States, they remain the second leading cause of injury-related deaths.

You just never know when your training will be needed.

Mark Schrader was eating lunch at Chipotle when a woman sitting at the table next to him started choking on her burrito. Donna Taylor got a piece of steak caught in her throat, and began gasping for breath.

Has anyone told you it's cold today? Be safe out there- you know the routine: Cover as much skin as you can with warm clothing, hats, scarves and mittens (better than gloves for staying warm), and recognize frostbite warning signs: gray, white or yellow skin discoloration, tingling or numbness. And don't forget your pets- they can also get frostbite if outside for too long!

How many of you had moms who told you to tip your head back when you had a bloody nose? Moms are seldom wrong, but this is one of those times! Lean forward while pinching your nose- this prevents you from swallowing blood, which can irritate your stomach.
