Many folks diagnosed with eating disorders have a history of trauma. There are many factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, but it’s not surprising that the effects of trauma can often show up in the relationship with food.

For those going back to school 📝 or otherwise have changes in their schedule, do yourself a favor and plan out when you will eat! 🍽

Eating Disorder recovery requires that you be diligent about feeding yourself—long after ED urges have quieted. Eating is self-care!

Make sure you are taking time for three meals plus 2-3 snacks per day. Write down at least an hour window for meals and a half hour window for snacks. Then try to stick with that schedule.

Tips for staying on schedule:
😴 Wake up on time
🚨 Set an alarm for each meal/snack
🚙 Keep snacks in your car/backpack
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Let other people know your plan
⭕️ Set boundaries
📒 Write it in your planner

Very rarely I write poetry. ✍️

❤️ But Valentine’s Day and body image just go together and I had to celebrate this month with a poem.

Mirrors aren’t evil, and there is a healthy balance to having them in our lives.

🙈Sometimes people with negative body image avoid mirrors. It’s important to be able to look in the mirror without too much distress.

But sometimes using the mirror can become obsessive. How do you know if you spend too much time in front of the mirror?
🪞 You’re often late when you’re getting ready.
🪞 You’re body checking, for example pinching or measuring.
🪞 You lose track of time looking in the mirror while picking or examining.
🪞 You’re trying in multiple outfits and nothing seems right.
🪞 You’re speaking negatively to yourself.
🪞 Family members or significant others are concerned.

There are ways to help you see your WHOLE self in the mirror and have a good balance.

Did you know that your weight is not the only measure of physical health?!? In fact, it’s a TERRIBLE measure of health. 🚫⚖️

If you’re trying to avoid the diet trap (very hard in January!) but want to focus on your physical health and wellness, try these ideas instead. 📈

And remember: physical health isn’t the only way to be well. So don’t just focus on that if you’re wanting to better yourself. Focus on balancing all areas of your life—physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, relational, environmental, and financial. ✅

One of my goals this year is to do the physical therapy exercises I’ve been prescribed.

Don’t give in, my friends!

Diet and wellness brands make money off your insecurities. 💰

As much as you may think so, diets don’t make anyone truly happy. They may bring temporary pleasure based on unrealistic cultural standards, but they will never provide long-term joy.

Also, Noom is a diet. 🙄
