REPOST. “Granny Midwives,” were African-American women in the rural South who, from slavery through the mid-20th century, served as primary birth attendants, family counselors, breastfeeding consultants, postpartum doulas, nutritionists,  advocates and community caregivers. Many were descendants of enslaved West African women trained in midwifery, and provided services to both Black and White families in areas lacking access to physicians. Their skills and knowledge were invaluable and laid the foundation for modern day midwifery. In the early 20th century, the medical establishment would introduce regulations and licensing. The grannies who could not comply with state law, went from being well respected to persecuted and were forced out of practice.Their decline in the 1950s coincided with increased racial disparities in maternal health outcomes.

I am doula ! What’s that ?

A doula ( DOO-LAA) is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, informational, and advocacy support to a person and their family before, during, and after childbirth.

That’s what Google will tell you a doula is, but this is so much deeper for me. I’m on assignment. This is purpose work. I show up with intention, grace, and love to support families in one of the most sacred seasons of their lives. I do this because God called me to it and I answer that call every time.

‼️Having a doula should be the standard, and there are many incredible doulas throughout the DMV. The first step is simply helping families find the right fit for their needs. That starts with sharing information, normalizing doula support, and connecting people to the resources that can help them feel supported and empowered‼️

So now that I’ve shared what I do, here’s what I ask of you :

✨Share my posts so others can learn what a doula is and why support matters
✨Tag me when someone asks questions about pregnancy, birth, or postpartum support
✨Recommend me by name when talking to expecting families
✨Invite others to ask me questions—I’m always happy to educate, no pressure
✨Send my page or website to someone who’s pregnant or planning a family
✨Encourage consultations so families can see if doula support is right for them
✨Normalize having a doula by talking about it openly and positively
✨Pray for my work and the families I serve
