Did you know? Poor-fitting shoes can contribute to the condition (Sever's Disease) by not providing enough support or padding for the feet or by rubbing against the back of the heel.
The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon that attaches to the growth plate in the heel. Over time, repeated stress (force or pressure) on the already tight Achilles tendon damages the growth plate, causing the swelling, tenderness, and pain of Sever's. *Source: Kid's Health*
Incidence of Sever's usually occurs during the growth spurt of adolescence, which can begin any time between the ages of 8 and 13 for girls and 10 and 15 for boys.
Good evening, everyone! We're wrapping up our discussion on Sever's disease with a few fast facts! Did you know: Sever's Disease is a common cause of heel pain in growing kids, especially those who are physically active.
Good evening and welcome to Rulanda Taylor and Elizabeth Kaddoura! It's a beautiful evening here in Dallas; perfect football weather! Who are you rooting for in tonight's contests? =)
Good morning and welcome to Jennifer Parkinen! We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and have plans to get in some activity in this lovely weather!
It looks like we didn't have any questions today, so we have a question for you... would a later or earlier time on Thursdays be better for the "Ask Dr. J" segment?
Hello All, I am checking in. What questions or concerns are on your mind today?
Alright; it's 12:00 p.m.! Another edition of "Ask Dr. J" is underway!
Good morning all! Coming up at 12:00 p.m. CST, is "Ask Dr. J!" We'll post the question(s) anonymously if you'd prefer; we just want you to get the information you need and deserve to take the best next step. Looking forward to your questions! =)
Good morning everyone! Facebook and Twitter were abuzz last night after the replacement referees "bad call" in the Green Bay/Seattle game. It's fascinating how we can identify a bad call in sports or leisure, but miss the ones we make concerning our health. Swelling, numbness, tingling, pain or just not feeling your best are all signs from your body that we need to listen to; don't wait until you're in misery or brought in on a stretcher to pay attention. Have an awesome day!
Welcome Kelli Ward! We hope you find the information shared here useful and if so, share with your family and friends. We're about community here, so the more the merrier! Again, welcome and thanks for liking BOLT!
We'd like to thank each of you for stopping by today for Ask Dr. J. Whether you're an athlete, weekend warrior, or recovering coach potato, there are lots of ways to improve your performance and health. It's a pleasure to speak with you; see you next Thursday for another q/a session!
Inbox question: I've been doing Zumba to get in some exercise, but I'm noticing some pain in my knees with some of the moves. I've been to an ortho and I have some arthritis...is there anything I can do to remain active and not make my knees worse?
Ok! This week's edition of ”Ask Dr. J” is under way! How can we help you today?
T minus 15 minutes until today's Ask Dr. J! Got questions? We have answers! :-)
Good evening and welcome to Erin Mercer! Hopefully everyone has gotten their burning sports injury questions together for tomorrow's "Ask Dr. J"! Whether it's a nagging old injury, a new one, or perhaps you just want to prevent an injury from happening, we've got you covered! See you here tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., CST.
For those who may not be familiar with Sever's Disease, you may know it's 'relative' Osgood-Schlatter's. This is the condition where you often see a large bump right below the knee. Ring a bell, anyone?

Here are our buddies, Tom, Dick & Harry... because we love visuals around here. =)

Good morning and welcome to our page, Melissa Gold! We'd also like to take this time to say hello to our friends, Tom, Dick and Harry! This is a mneumonic for *T*ibialis Posterior, Flexor *D*igitorum, and Flexor *H*allucis; but we can't forget our buddy, Tre (the grouping of 3 muscles on the back part of the lower leg seen in the photo), Gastrocnemius, Soleus, and Plantaris. When these muscles start tugging on the bones of the foot, like the heel or the tarsals, we call this condition by it's name, Sever's Disease.
Greetings from an overcast Dallas, TX! We've been discussing plantar fasciitis and this upcoming week will be moving on to a condition that is often confused with it, Sever's Disease. Get your questions together for "Ask Dr. J" on Thursday and stay tuned for more injury education, prevention and treatment tips. We're here to serve and it's our joy to share with you. Have an amazing remainder of the weekend!
Thanks for stopping by and participating in our first "Ask Dr. J!" session. We ran over a little bit today, but we'll be back next Thursday ready to answer your sports injury questions. It's a pleasure to chat with and serve you; let us know if you found the information shared useful!

1. Keeping your back flat against the pad, squeeze your abs and pull your legs up and forward, till they are parallel to the ground. Exhale as you go up.
2. As you bring your legs down, till they are in line with the body.
Repeat the above two steps 10-15 times, making sure you do not use momentum. Start out with a single set and work up to 3 sets.
*Remember not to arch your back.*

Mountain Climbers - Butt/Hips, Legs - Thighs, Full Body/Integrated - Get Fit Exercise Library - Amer this is the description

The standing crossover crunch looks a lot like the bicycle move done on the floor, with an emphasis on the obliques. To really get the most out of this exercise, go slow and focus on bringing the shoulder towards the hip, rather than the elbow to the knee. This will put the focus on rotating through the torso and engaging the core rather than swinging the arm towards the knee. (Source: about.com)
So let's get started with our first "Ask Dr. J" session! Any sports or fitness injury questions are welcome!
It's Tuesday... is your week off to a great start? Let's finish up talking about plantar fasciitis! Some common conditions that mimic plantar fasciitis that should be ruled out are: calcaneal stress fracture, radiating pain from sciatica from the hip or back and tarsal tunnel syndrome. In teenagers, there is also a common condition with the growth plate causing bottom of the heel pain called Sever's Disease.
