I love flip-flops. To me, they represent being done with work. I have one trusty pair of well-worm flip-flops that have been with me to Florida, California, Kenya, and India. At home, they accompany me to the backyard hot tub at the end of the long day, or to the patio on a warm summer night with a glass of wine. To me, flip-flops signal relaxation. In the midst of every day chaos and crisis, flip-flops are the calm in the storm.
I have been a practicing master level social worker for over 25 years. I am also a certified case manager and a life coach. In addition, I am a certified personal trainer with specializations in Fitness Nutrition and Weight Loss. I am also most recently, a certified Integrative Nutrition Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I have worked with many types of people over the years, in many settings, anywhere from counseling teenagers in a psychiatric hospital to helping inmates find jobs when they get out of jail. I’ve worked with individuals on the brink of su***de, homeless men and women trying to survive the winter on the streets, to families of children with autism, trying to help find services for their child. I’ve been an advocate for autism insurance legislation and worked in the healthcare industry for many years. In addition, I am an avid gym enthusiast and slightly obsessed with healthy eating. In over 25 years, amongst all of the different people I have worked with and counseled, the one thing that is common to all of them, is an inordinate amount of stress.
I have seen the detrimental effects of stress on people. I have felt it myself and still do feel it from time to time! The difference being that today, I have worked really hard to identify the things I can do to alleviate my stress, whether it is by changing the stressor itself, or changing my attitude about the stressor. When I was going through one of my most stressful periods of time- I had an autistic child, my marriage was falling apart, my job was too demanding, my mother was very ill, my financial situation was dire- I dealt with my stress by over-working, over-drinking, over-eating, over-spending, and under-sleeping. I was giving and doing 100% for other people, and had no energy left for myself, for my marriage, my family, for my health or for my happiness. I was miserable. After I hit rock bottom when I got a divorce, filed for bankruptcy and quit a couple of jobs, I decided enough was enough. I worked really hard to not only understand how I got myself into the mess I was in, but how to get out of it and make a better life for myself and my kids.
