Dear Parents,

Summer is the perfect time to strengthen your child’s reading skills and prevent the “summer slide.” Our Summer Reading Tutoring & Intervention Program provides individualized support designed to help children grow in reading confidence and ability before the next school year begins.

Our sessions are provided by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who specialize in language, literacy, and reading development. The intervention will be tailored to your child’s specific needs, whether they need support with phonics, decoding, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, or overall reading confidence.

Our instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading, meaning we use research-based methods proven to improve reading outcomes. Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may include:

Explicit phonics and decoding instruction

Phonological and phonemic awareness activities

Vocabulary and language development

Reading fluency practice

Reading comprehension strategies

Structured literacy approaches

This program is ideal for students who:

Struggle with reading or spelling

Need extra support with phonics or decoding

Have language-based learning challenges

Want to strengthen reading skills before the next school year

***we do accept LEARNS Act Funding!

Executive function isn’t one single skill — it’s a group of brain skills working together behind the scenes.

These are the core executive function areas that help a child remember instructions, manage feelings, stay organised, shift thinking, and get started on tasks. They are the “management team” of the brain.

Here’s the part many people don’t realise: these skills are largely driven by the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that develops slowly from childhood right through to the mid-twenties. So when a child struggles with planning, impulse control, or emotional regulation, it often reflects brain development, not behaviour choices.

Some children — especially those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other neurodivergent profiles — may develop these skills differently or need more scaffolding and support along the way.

Understanding the core areas of executive function helps us respond with support instead of frustration. When we adjust expectations to match development, children do better.

Arkansas Children’s pediatric otolaryngologist Dr. Robert Saadi successfully performed bilateral cochlear implant surgery on an 11-week-old patient, making her the youngest in Arkansas – and one of the youngest ever – to undergo this procedure.

Cochlear implants work by bypassing the damaged parts of the inner ear and sending sound signals directly to the auditory nerve, giving children access to sound even with profound hearing loss.

After a severe case of meningitis, the patient’s cochlea began to ossify, which happens when inflammation causes new bone to form and close the normal fluid-filled channel of the cochlea, placing her at high risk for permanent profound hearing loss, and it can prevent cochlear implantation in the future.

When the implant was activated, her parents witnessed an unforgettable moment: the restoration of their daughter’s hearing and her responding to their voices for the first time since she had meningitis.

Congratulations to our cochlear implant team on this incredible achievement!
