This is a fundamental truth!! Our elders worked diligently to earn their daily meals, and if they fell short, they went hungry. No fast food chains, no convenience stores around the corner, no meal delivery apps. During periods of scarcity, they endured fasting, which paradoxically allowed their bodies to focus energy on healing and generating new, healthy immune cells. Today, when we're beset with illness, our knee-jerk reaction is to stress about not eating, when in fact, fasting can be a therapeutic pathway to self-recovery.

Hospitals send people home faster that ever! Rehab stays ends sooner.
Home health is still a key recovery component, but it can take days for Home Health to start.
Meanwhile, families are left doing “nurse work” without a nurse.

🌀 NO AIR CONDITIONING. JUST FANS IN THE HALLWAY.

Every once in a while someone says something online that stops you cold… because it instantly takes you back.

Someone wrote:

“And we did it with no air conditioning. Just fans in the hallways…”

And if you know… you know.

Because nursing back then wasn’t just hard.
It was a whole different world.

The halls were hot.
The rooms were hotter.
And those old fans didn’t “cool” anything… they just moved warm air around like it was doing you a favor.

You’d walk into a shift already sweating.
By midnight your uniform was sticking to you.
And by morning? You looked like you survived a storm.

And then there was the part people today don’t even believe when you tell them…

Not every room had a bathroom.

So what did we do?

Bedpans.
Commode pans.
Carried down the hall like it was just part of the job… because it was.

And you didn’t have fancy disposal systems.
You had a place some nurses today have never even heard of…

The hopper room.

That little room with the smell you could recognize with your eyes closed.

And night shift nurses?
They KNOW what happened in that hopper room.

Because there was literally a schedule.

Someone pulled bedpans.
Someone washed them.
Someone made sure they went back.

And here’s the part that will make every old-school nurse laugh out loud:

You’d mark the bedpan with a marker so it could go back to the same patient.

Not because it was “extra.”
Not because it was funny.

Because it was survival.

Because you didn’t have endless supplies.
You didn’t have disposable everything.
You had what you had… and you made it work.

That was nursing.

It wasn’t glamorous.
It wasn’t Instagram-worthy.
But it was real.

And the funny part is… we didn’t sit around complaining.

We just did it.

We didn’t call it “trauma.”
We called it Tuesday.

And now when people say things like…

“What’s a hopper room?”

You realize how much the world has changed.

But you also realize something else:

Those nurses who worked in that era?

They were built different.

Not because they were better…
but because they had to be.

💭 Old-school nurses… do you remember the hopper room?
Did you have to scrub bedpans on night shift?

👇 Drop your story in the comments — because I KNOW some of you have memories that would shock nurses today.

True story 😂😂

🚬 SMOKING. IN. THE. HOSPITAL.

New nurses won’t believe this…

But there was a time when patients smoked in their beds like it was completely normal.

Ashtrays at the nurses’ station.
Smoke in the break room.
Doctors charting with a cigarette in hand.

Now it sounds unreal…

But back then?

It was just another shift.

💬 Be honest…
Did your hospital have a smoking lounge?
Or did people just light up wherever they wanted? 😭

Tag a nurse who remembers this era.
