Sometimes we feel so burdened by consciousness. What good is it to have a conscious will? 16th century mystic Jacob Böhme once said that the conscious will was our "playmate in the divine kingdom of joy", but that we have forgotten this, and now feel burdened by it. How different does our mind feel when we view it as our playmate instead of "who we are"?

It's easy to dismiss a dream as little more than an arbitrary firing of neurons, as an empty biological process, excluding any illuminating spiritual interpretations. But who told us we should differentiate between the material and spiritual worlds? Paraphrasing Giordano Bruno: "there is no divinity which can be distinguished from its manifestations".

St. Teresa of Avila describes a process that seems identical, to me, to the re-integration that happens during dream interpretation. The "inhabitants" are our archetypal dream figures, the king is the Self: "Let's say that the senses and the faculties, which are the inhabitants of the interior castle, have gone outside. Let's say they have been hanging around for days and years with strangers who despise all that is beautiful about the castle. When they realize their error, they come back... they are not traitors... when the great king who is dwelling in the center of the castle perceives their good will, he desires in his wondrous mercy to bring them back to him. He calls to them like a good shepherd beckons his sheep, with a whistle so soft they barely hear it."

When we pay attention to our dream figures, when we listen to them with gentleness, we call them back into the interior of our soul.

I am presenting another dream workshop in December! It takes place on 12/6 at 1 pm at Center of Peace in Mount Pleasant. We will be discussing the philosophy of Carl Jung, then diving into the theory and practice of dream interpretation with multiple exercises along the way. Once we are initiated into the exciting world of dreamwork, there will be time for us to share dream symbols and get immediate reflections and insight from the group. Hope you can make it!

When we start our spiritual work, we often hope it will bring us to a state of bliss. We're surprised to find that, actually, we often suffer on the path, sometimes deeper than we ever have before. It might be comforting to think of Bernard of Clairvaux, who, noticing that he felt closer to the divine whenever he was in trouble, smiled and said: "let me be in trouble always".

Dreams are fascinating, but dream interpretation also has a shadow side, which I have learned the hard way (and am still learning!). Thomas Merton: "A false supernaturalism which imagines that 'the supernatural' is a kind of Platonic realm of abstract essences totally apart from and opposed to the concrete world of nature, offers no real support to a genuine life of meditation and prayer. Meditation has no point and no reality unless it is firmly rooted in life. Without such roots, it can produce nothing but the ashen fruits of disgust, acedia, and even morbid and degenerate introversion, masochism, dolorism, negation." (Contemplative Prayer, p. 39)

We tend to think of our fantasies as containing our deepest desires. Actually in many cases they show us what we fear most in life. Daydreams, goals, imaginative games, etc. are creative -- they guide us toward their realization. They are still tethered to reality. Fantasies on the other hand tower over us with an unreal glow. They are not productive but protective. We are safe from their overwhelming contents so long as they remain within our minds. Maybe one of the sicknesses of our time is the notion that you should "accomplish" your wildest fantasies, and that we are shown countless images of people who have supposedly done this. But living in fantasy means living in fear.

At the end of October, 10/25, I will be leading a workshop: "Introduction to Dream Interpretation and Jungian Perspectives" at The Yoga Place in Midland, MI! This workshop will include a talk on the history of psychological repression in the West, an overview of dream interpretation techniques through the works of Carl Jung, and several interactive exercises that will help get you started on your personal dream interpretation journey. What are symbols, exactly? And what are archetypes? How has the unconscious mind been shaped by our culture, and what does it contain? What techniques can I use to understand the messages my dreams are bringing me? We'll talk about all that and more. :) $25, limited to ten people. Today I made an offhand comment about wanting to visit Nietzsche's grave... it turns out today is actually the 125th anniversary of his death. So, in honor of one of the most courageous, rascally, and illuminating philosopher's ever, I want to quote this moment in which Zarathustra is sitting with Life herself, just before dying. He says: "we looked at each other and gazed at the green meadow, over which the cool evening had just spread, and we wept together. -- But at that moment I loved life more than I ever loved all my wisdom."

Thus spoke Zarathustra.
