Is your child or client not making progress in therapy? Change up the intervention! Kids learn in different ways (just like us) and as a therapist we may need to alter what we are doing to see more progress. Kids must be engaged and having FUN in order to learn! The therapist-child relationship matters and the stronger the trust, the better the outcomes.

ABCs and 123s are great, but if a child can’t tell you they want more food, their leg hurts, or they need their blanket, what good is the language that they have? Think about what your child NEEDS to communicate throughout the day to function in ways to get theirs needs met and participate socially with family and peers. Word choice matters when a child has a limited vocabulary and is learning to talk!

Early intervention is SO important! The brain can more easily make changes early on in development. Have concerns about your child’s speech or language? Don’t wait! Talk to your child’s doctor or reach out to a speech-language pathologist for an evaluation.

As parents, we ask our kids a lot of questions. This puts pressure on any child, particularly if a child does not have the language to answer the question. Even though it’s not our intention, this may take away from a learning opportunity. Instead, MODEL the word or phrase to teach them the language. Then pause and wait to see if they imitate the word(s) back. This is far more effective than asking your child a question or saying “say ____”!
