ABA Therapy: Fact vs. Fiction

There’s a lot of information—and misinformation—out there about ABA therapy. Let’s clear a few things up:

Fiction: ABA therapy tries to “change” who a child is.
Fact: ABA therapy supports children in building meaningful skills—like communication, independence, and social interaction—while honoring who they are.

Fiction: ABA is rigid and one-size-fits-all.
Fact: Quality ABA is highly individualized. Every program is tailored to the child’s strengths, needs, and goals.

Fiction: ABA is only for young children.
Fact: ABA can benefit individuals of all ages, from early intervention through adolescence and beyond.

Fiction: ABA focuses only on behavior reduction.
Fact: The primary focus is skill-building—helping individuals gain tools to succeed at home, in school, and in the community.

At Heart & Home ABA, we believe therapy should feel supportive, respectful, and centered around the whole family.

If you have questions about ABA or want to learn more, we’re always here to help. 💙

We are being denied credentialing and contracting with all 4 of IN Medicaid MCEs! We are fully approved for traditional Medicaid! What gives? These clowns are single handedly affecting our revenue! We have at least 2 clients wanting our services being denied. We have a total of 4 clients with them so it’s not like we are raking in the cash and these denials could cost us big time! TIA!!

ABA Myth: “ABA tries to eliminate stimming.”

Reality: Ethical ABA doesn’t target stimming just because it looks different. Stimming can be self-regulation and coping. We only address it if it’s dangerous, causing injury, or seriously interfering with learning/health—and we replace it with safe, effective regulation options, not shame.

Caption (H&H voice):
Stimming isn’t “bad behavior.” It’s often communication and regulation. At Heart & Home ABA, we prioritize safety and dignity—supporting healthy coping skills without trying to make kids “look typical.” 💜

Gotcha—let’s do a fresh one.

MYTH vs. FACT – ABA & Age

MYTH: “ABA is only for little kids.”

FACT: ABA can support children, teens, and adults. The core of ABA is teaching meaningful, real-life skills—communication, daily living, social connections, workplace readiness, and more. At Heart & Home ABA, we tailor goals to each person’s age, interests, and long-term dreams, whether that’s making friends, navigating school, or building independence as a young adult. 💙

ABA isn’t about age limits—it’s about the right support at the right time.

This Thanksgiving, our hearts are extra full. 🧡🧩

As many of you know, Heart & Home ABA was born out of our own journey as parents of a child on the autism spectrum. For years, we sat on the “other side” of the table—trying to navigate services, fighting for what our child needed, and saying to ourselves over and over, “There has to be a better way.” Heart & Home ABA exists because we finally decided to build that “better way” for other families, too.

Today, we just want to say thank you.

🙏 To our families:
Thank you for inviting us into your homes, your routines, and your stories. We know that handing your child’s care to someone else is not a small decision. You trust us with your hopes, your fears, your questions, and your exhausted days—and we don’t take that lightly. Every intake, every phone call, every session is a reminder that real people, real families, and real futures are at the center of what we do. Your children inspire us, stretch us, and remind us why this work matters so deeply.

🙏 To the incredible kids we serve (and will soon serve):
You are the reason we get up and push for something better. Every new word, new skill, new friendship, new moment of independence—no matter how small it might look on paper—is a huge victory. You teach us patience, creativity, and resilience. You remind us that progress rarely follows a straight line, but it is absolutely worth fighting for.

🙏 To our team—BCBAs, RBTs, and support staff:
Thank you for choosing to do hard, meaningful, heart-first work. You show up when plans change, behaviors spike, schedules get messy, and life doesn’t go according to the textbook. You don’t just “run programs”—you build relationships, celebrate tiny wins, and stand beside families on the tough days. Our vision for a more supportive, respectful, and family-centered ABA experience only works because of the people who live it out day after day.

🙏 To the professionals who partner with us:
Pediatricians, school staff, therapists, case managers, and community partners—thank you for collaborating, referring, and helping us build a network of support around each child. When we say “team,” we mean all of you, too. The best outcomes happen when everyone works together, and we are grateful for every email, meeting, and shared plan to help a child thrive.

🙏 To our community:
Thank you for welcoming a new ABA provider into this area. Starting something from the ground up is not easy, but your encouragement, shares, likes, messages, and kind words have meant more than you know. Every time you tell a friend about Heart & Home ABA or send someone our info, you’re helping a family who may be feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure where to turn.

This year, we are especially thankful for:
• Families who are honest with us about what’s working and what’s not
• Kids who meet us where they are and let us grow with them
• A team that believes in doing ABA differently—with compassion, transparency, and respect
• A community that understands ABA is not a “quick fix,” but a long-term investment in a child’s future

From our family to yours: thank you for believing in us, trusting us, and walking this road with us. We’re just getting started, and we are committed to pushing for better—better support for families, better working conditions for staff, and better outcomes for the incredible kids we serve.

Wishing you a peaceful, cozy, and hope-filled Thanksgiving from all of us at Heart & Home ABA. 🧡

If you or someone you know is wondering whether ABA might be a good fit for their child, we’re here to talk, answer questions, and help you explore options—no pressure, just support. 💬

ABA Myth vs. Reality

MYTH:
“ABA therapy is just about making kids ‘behave’ and follow commands.”

REALITY:
High-quality ABA is not about control—it’s about teaching skills that help kids be more independent, confident, and understood. We focus on communication, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and meaningful social connections, not robots and blind compliance.

At Heart & Home ABA, every program is individualized, collaborative, and built around your child’s strengths and your family’s values. 💙🧩

If you’ve heard confusing or scary things about ABA and want a clearer picture, we’re always happy to talk and answer questions.

If you’re looking for a fresh, genuinely different ABA experience, look no further—Heart & Home ABA is here.

Our practice was founded by two parents of an autistic child who spent years navigating “business as usual” and constantly thinking, we can do better. So we did. Heart & Home ABA was built from the ground up to fix what hasn’t worked in the past—putting compassion, communication, and true partnership with families at the center of everything we do.

We’re not just another ABA provider. We’re raising the bar for clients, for employees, and for the industry as a whole—creating a place where children are supported, families feel heard, and therapists are respected and valued.

✨ Heart & Home ABA: Not just ABA—ABA done better.

ABA comes with a lot of myths and misunderstandings – so let’s clear a few up. 💬💛

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy that helps children with autism build meaningful, real-world skills, like:
• Communication and language
• Daily living skills (toothbrushing, getting dressed, routines)
• Social skills and play
• Emotional regulation and coping
• Independence at home, at school, and in the community

Good ABA is collaborative, kind, and individualized. At Heart & Home ABA, every plan is built around your child, your values, and your family’s goals.

What ABA is not

ABA is not:
• A one-size-fits-all program
• Just “compliance training” or forcing kids to act a certain way
• Endless table work and drills
• Designed to change who your child is
• A quick fix or short-term solution

ABA is a long-term, consistent program. To truly see progress that sticks, kids need regular sessions over time—not “on for a bit, off for a bit.”

We coach families that ABA is a commitment, not something we can pause for the summer or take long breaks from and expect the same growth. We work with you to build a schedule that’s sustainable and realistic, while still supporting your child’s progress.

How is ABA paid for? 💳

One of the biggest myths we hear:

“We can’t afford ABA unless we have the Medicaid Waiver.”

The truth:
✅ Many commercial insurance plans cover most, if not all, of the cost of ABA once there is an autism diagnosis and prior authorization.
✅ Children may qualify for Medicaid or Medicaid Waiver coverage depending on their situation.
✅ Families often pay far less out of pocket than they expect.

At Heart & Home ABA, we:
• Verify your benefits for you
• Explain your coverage in plain language
• Review any co-pays or out-of-pocket costs before we start services
