We are to announce that Matthew A. Zuino, MSIS, FACHE, has been named the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Baptist Health, effective January 17, 2026.

Matt, who has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2020, will succeed Michael A. Mayo, DHA, FACHE, who announced earlier this year his plans to retire as Baptist Health’s CEO after a distinguished four-decade career in health care leadership.

As COO, Matt oversees operations across hospitals, physician practices and ambulatory services. His leadership continues to shape the future of Baptist Health, elevating quality, strengthening access and enhancing the patient experience.

“This is an exciting, transformational time at Baptist Health,” said Matt. “I feel very fortunate to build upon our 70-year legacy as the area’s only locally headquartered, mission-driven, faith-based health system. Our future will be defined by how well we listen, innovate and accelerate our commitment to those we serve as we look toward 2030 and beyond.”

Fighting hunger. Feeding hope. 💙 Every day, Waste Not Florida rescues thousands of pounds of perfectly good food that might otherwise go to waste — delivering nearly 2 million pounds each year to neighbors in need across 14 Northeast Florida counties!

DID YOU KNOW? In Clay County alone, food insecurity rose from 8% in 2021 to nearly 12% in 2023. In Duval County, the rate is approaching 15%.

At Baptist Health, we’re proud to support Waste Not Want Not's vital mission — from helping them expand storage capacity and providing technology tools, to our team members rolling up their sleeves and volunteering alongside their team to get more nutritious food where it’s needed most. 💪

“We get food out into the community immediately,” said Kathleen Spears, PhD, Waste Not Want Not executive director. “It is so important for people confronting debilitating, chronic illnesses to have wholesome, healthy food that oftentimes they can’t afford.”

Thanks to their work, organizations like The Kitchen of Clay County can provide meals that help bridge the gap for seniors, children and families who might not have enough to eat during the week.

“This food is critical in supplying our 800 guests with meals each week,” said Jennifer Knight, vice president of The Kitchen of Clay County.

Pictured are members of our team lending a hand at the agency’s Orange Park distribution center, helping sort and prepare food to support neighbors in need.

“Our leaders felt a deep sense of reward, knowing the work we were doing helps alleviate food insecurity and benefits so many in our community,” said Ed Hubel, Baptist Clay hospital president.

NEWBORN TO NOW! 🍼🩵 Our team knows that having a baby is one of the most important days of any mother’s life.

When Hazel visited to deliver her baby boy, Silas, our team was there with her every step of the way to provide comfort and care. Here’s Hazel on her experience:

“There were two nurses who were amazing, one being the charge nurse—she came into my room and sat with me while we waited on our incredible midwife. The other nurse was around while I was postpartum and always made me feel so comfortable, sharing stories of her own personal experiences with her babies, and just talked to me a lot and made me laugh.”

There’s nothing like the pride of a new mother! 😍 Our recent patient and Baptist team member, Deana, was thrilled to show off this photo of her baby boy Jett, who was born on September 18th. Of her experience at , Deana said:

“Baptist Clay was AMAZING! I mainly had Evelyn as my nurse, and she was the sweetest. She was very kind and reassuring. She was welcoming and informative during the labor process. Just a super sweet young lady 😊.”

New Hospital Coming 2022

More than expert medical care, the new hospital will serve as a place for wellness, education and healing

To meet the growing need for health care services in Clay County, Baptist Health is planning to build a full-service hospital on its existing Baptist Clay Medical Campus on Fleming Island. Groundbreaking will occur in the spring of 2020, with the hospital opening planned for early 2022.

The 300,000-square-foot, full-service hospital will open with 100 beds, including women’s services and enhanced cardiology services. The hospital will be designed with modern features, including placing diagnostic equipment near the ICU for patients who need it the most, and corridors designed with calming LED lighting, and centralized staff services to minimize noise.

These services are in addition to those already existing at the Baptist Clay Campus in Fleming Island, which opened in May of 2013, and includes an adult ER, a Wolfson Children’s Hospital ER, an ambulatory surgery center, specialty services, and imaging.

Baptist Health is investing $200 million to build the new hospital, which will create 700 new jobs in Clay County. Baptist Health is targeting the rapidly expanding Clay County area, with a median age of 39, to meet the growing medical needs of families in the area.

“Clay County residents tell us they need more hospital-based health care services close to where they live and work,” said Darin Roark, BSN, MBA, RN, FACHE, current vice president of Ambulatory Campuses and Emergency Services, who will serve as the new hospital’s president. “Having a full-service hospital nearby will eliminate the need for travel, while providing the medical expertise that Baptist Health is known for.”

The new hospital is being designed with patients’ and visitors’ preferences in mind, with large private patient rooms and onsite amenities, like Starbucks, an outdoor dining area, and a large community room for meetings and education that can hold up to 125 people.

“It will be a place of health and wellness for the community,” said Roark. “We will host a variety of health-related events, such as “Talk with a Doc” discussions on a variety of health topics.”

The hospital campus will include an outdoor jogging path connecting to the current Black Creek Trail. “As part of Baptist Health’s commitment to the community, the plants and trees along the lake banks will be maintained and the large Oak Grove on the southern end of the campus will be preserved,” Roark said.

Roark joined Baptist Health in 2012 as an assistant administrator overseeing all emergency centers in the health system. Roark has served as administrator of the Baptist Clay Medical Campus since October 2013 and serves as the Baptist Health liaison in Clay County. He is the current chairman of the board of The Clay County Chamber of Commerce and is on the board of the Clay County Utility Authority. Roark and his family live in Fleming Island.

“As a Clay County resident for many years, I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to bring world-class, patient-focused health care to Clay County,” Roark said.
