In a planned leadership transition that reflects internal succession planning and continuity, Michael A. Mayo, DHA, FACHE announced yesterday that he would be retiring from Baptist Health Jacksonville after a transformative four-year tenure as President and CEO.

Michael has guided the organization through significant growth, major technological advances, and transformational initiatives within the organization and in the community, aligned with the health system’s mission and strategic plan, which prioritizes people, quality and the careful management of resources to serve others and sustain long-term impact.

“This announcement of my retirement and transition timeline is part of an intentional, multi-year succession and leadership development process that I have worked on with our Board for a very long time,” said Dr. Mayo. “From the moment I became CEO, it was clear that a long-term, structured succession strategy would help ensure Baptist Health would be well prepared with a pipeline of senior leadership for the future.”

Dr. Mayo will step down as CEO on January 16, 2026 and transition into a more narrowly-focused Executive-in-Residence (EIR) role. The Baptist Health Board of Directors, working in conjunction with Dr. Mayo, have already begun the selection process for the new CEO with a goal of naming an internal successor before the end of 2025.

As Michael prepares for a much-deserved retirement, he looks forward to enjoying some of his greatest passions — traveling with his wife, continuing to teach at the University of North Florida, and of course, riding his Harley. Our entire team owes him a debt of gratitude for his tireless work across our health system and our community. Thank you for all that you’ve done, Dr. Mayo!

As APP Week wraps up, we’re taking a moment to recognize the vital role Advanced Practice Providers play at Baptist Clay and in our community.

Who are Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)? They are highly educated, highly trained medical providers who work collaboratively with physician colleagues and the health care team to deliver expert, compassionate care.

The APP family includes:
🔹 Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
🔹 Physician Assistants (PAs)
🔹 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs)
🔹 Anesthesiology Assistants (AAs)
🔹 Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs)
🔹 Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs)

From providing primary care to managing chronic conditions, assisting in surgeries to ensuring safe anesthesia, APPs make a difference in every corner of health care and the Baptist Health Jacksonville system. Their advanced training allows them to diagnose, treat, prescribe, and educate patients - helping to expand access to care and improve health outcomes in our communities.

This APP Week, we proudly celebrate and thank our APPs for their expertise, compassion and dedication.

A big day at Baptist Clay! We celebrated the ribbon cutting for our expanded Emergency Department, created to provide even greater access to ER care as Clay County continues to grow.

This expansion adds 11 new patient rooms, bringing our total to 27. With this growth, we’re strengthening our unique model of care: two emergency centers under one roof — a Baptist Emergency Center for adults and a Wolfson Children's Hospital Emergency Center for patients ages 0–17.

This year alone, our ER has cared for more than 38,000 patients. This expansion ensures we can continue delivering the right care, close to home for our community.

Special thanks to the Clay County Chamber of Commerce Florida and everyone who joined us to celebrate this milestone.

We are to announce that Baptist Medical Center Clay has received the highest quality distinction for stroke care from the American Heart Association! Not only did earn the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite award, but all five of our adult hospitals were also awarded the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award and Target: Type 2 Diabetes℠ Honor Roll award.

Not all stroke centers are created equal, and these elite awards recognize our commitment to providing state-of-the-art treatment to patients as quickly as possible. Our multi-disciplinary teams work together across our sites to provide life-saving care every day. Baptist Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center is the regional leader in advanced diagnostics and treatments for strokes, brain aneurysms and other cerebrovascular conditions. The center’s reach extends to more than two dozen hospitals and satellite ERs via the Telestroke Program, which virtually connects physicians and health care professionals in the greater Jacksonville area and South Central Georgia with Baptist Health’s stroke experts. Accessible 24/7, the program promotes quicker diagnosis and treatment, reduces disability and saves lives.

“We are committed to being a trusted resource not only for stroke care, but also for education and prevention,” said Nima Amin Aghaebrahim, MD, a neurointerventionalist and system medical director for stroke at Baptist Health. “We take pride in expanding access to innovative stroke treatments and strengthening stroke education in our community.”

New Hospital Coming 2022

More than expert medical care, the new hospital will serve as a place for wellness, education and healing

January 22, 2020

To meet the growing need for health care services in Clay County, Baptist Health is planning to build a full-service hospital on its existing Baptist Clay Medical Campus on Fleming Island. Groundbreaking will occur in the spring of 2020, with the hospital opening planned for early 2022.

The 300,000-square-foot, full-service hospital will open with 100 beds, including women’s services and enhanced cardiology services. The hospital will be designed with modern features, including placing diagnostic equipment near the ICU for patients who need it the most, and corridors designed with calming LED lighting, and centralized staff services to minimize noise.
