“Hi! I’m Tiffany. Welcome to my episode of “A Day In My Boots”

How does EMS affect your mental health and how do you handle it?
Some days EMS exhausts me. Most days EMS is my outlet. EMS is what keeps me going 90% of the time besides my kids. But we have our good days and we have our bad days. The bad days mentally breaks me whether it be because of a bad call or exhaustion. EMS is my connection to my sister I lost my sister in 2020 and she was a AEMT. I also like EMS because I am able to help others, I can help others in ways I couldn’t receive help as a child. To help me through these struggles I schedule naps and/ or go to the gym. Meet up with friends and we talk.

How do you feel we can reduce the stigma surrounding mental health?
Educate! Be transparent. Support one another, don’t judge one another. Be a listening ear. Let people know they are not alone!

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about mental health?
Mental health is a real medical condition. It is not a way for attention. It is not something we should brush off. Mental health controls everything about us. It’s a real problem that everyone struggles with and we should be there for one another.

What’s your reason for persevering through mental health struggles?
My children! My children are my reason. Honestly, without my children I would not feel as if I had a reason to keep going. I show them everyday that no matter what you face you keep going. No matter how many times we are told” you can’t do this, you are nothing, you won’t ever be able to do that” push to prove them wrong. Push to show them you can do whatever you put your mind/ heart too.

What piece of advice would you share with someone who is struggling?
Never give up. Don’t stop! You serve a purpose. Do not be afraid to call or ask for help. You are here for a reason. You are not a burden! If you feel no one is here for you we are. We are here to help you. We will be a listening ear, we will be a shoulder to cry on. Holding your feelings in is unhealthy you have to have someone to talk to whether it be friend, family, coworker, or a total stranger. I held my feelings in for years and it drove me deeper and deeper into a depression. We are here, there is help, there are outlets. Please remember YOU DO MATTER!”
