It started with a simple change.

We’d moved the bird feeder to a hook on the back porch—just temporarily—during some yard maintenance.

A few days later, I glanced out the window and there she was.

A mother house finch.

Not eating.

Sitting.

Inside the feeder.

And nestled beneath her were four tiny blue eggs.

We watched.

Day by day, she stayed—through wind, through stillness.

Then one morning, they hatched.

But now, the nest is quieter.

The fledglings have gone.

And here’s the part that stunned me-

once the babies leave the nest, the parents no longer recognize them as their own.

All that warming, feeding, protecting…

And then one day, the little one’s scatter.

No backward glance.

No sentimental reunion. Just instinct.

it was never about being remembered.
