Dallas County 911 Center in Arkansas Recognizes National Telecommunicator Week

2025 National Telecommunicator Week

April 13th- 19th, 2025

Public safety agencies nationwide recognize the critical role played by Public Safety Telecommunicators. These professionals are true first “FIRST RESPONDERS”. They are the people who are answering the calls and directing First Responders, they are the most critical contact citizens have with emergency services.
Every year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety Telecommunicators in the United States. In 1991, Congress proclaimed it a national week of recognition.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office (Arkansas) will celebrate this year’s National Telecommunicators Week from April 13th-19th to honor and recognize the professionals who handle thousands of emergency calls each year in Dallas County Arkansas. These calls come from all over our county and some in adjoining counties as they could ping from close by towers. After determining the nature of the call and who will need to handle it being our department or transfer to one nearby, we handle the nature of the call to the best of our ability from the information we are given. These calls for service require the immediate response of public safety agencies to ensure the protection of life and preservation of property. Through their dedication, compassion, understanding and skill, our Telecommunicators ensure citizens get the help they need, when they need it.

When you dial 9-1-1, Fordyce Police Department, or the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch, a telecommunications professional answers the call. You can help by knowing your location, by staying on the line, and by following the directions given so the Telecommunicator can provide the assistance you need. You can rest assured there will be someone on the other end of the line ready to help in an emergency. Please join us as we honor the men and women who serve our community as Telecommunicators.
Between the Thin Blue Line and the Thin Red Line lies the Thinnest Gold Line. This Gold Line represents those who rarely are seen but mostly heard.

P.S.A. from your local Dispatch Center:

Did you know that mobile phones that are no longer in service, do not have minutes, or otherwise "pointless" for everyday life can still call out to 911? Now you do!

This feature, which is available to most mobile phones, no matter the status of said phone, can be lifesaving! If you are ever in a situation where you need emergency services and all you have is an old smartphone that may not be on your cellular plan or covered by a carrier, you can dial 911 and get in contact with a call taker just as you would any other phone. With this information however, it is also important to make a note that calls placed by these out-of-service phones do not have as much information readily available to the call taker who answers your call. This being said it's to be expected that the call taker may ask questions that, although in the moment may seem redundant or obvious, are extremely important to get you the emergency services and resources you need. Be prepared to be asked to answer questions such as a phone number in which you can be reached, your name, precise location, and other possible questions that all change depending on what the situation is that led you call us. If you know you do not have this information available in the moment, do not let it discourage you from calling. A call with limited information is better than no call at all. The faster we can who you need to you, the better. Even if details are missing at the time our emergency services are initially dispatched.

Additional P.S.A. while we're on the topic-
The same way that these phones can be used to dial out to 911 in emergent situations, they can also be dialed out accidentally. It is important to know if the phone you are giving your kid may have the ability to still call 911. We experience a high call-volume of very young kids playing with out-of-services phone calling 911 and not realizing the importance of only calling that number in the case of an emergency. If we have an open line (or are in some cases hung up on) in these situations by a young kids, we have no choice but to send services to the location to investigate further. Remember, when you call 911 on ANY device, we have no idea what it is that is happening on the other end of the line unless told by the caller, and with this we must handle every call that comes in very seriously until further details proving everything is okay are found or determined. Resources that are sent to a false alarm could mean life-or-death in other incidents which could occur during, before, or after investigation into said false alarm that awareness of the capabilities of a device in your child's possession could have prevented.

Thank you for taking time to read our message today and be sure to spread the word. We want to bring as much awareness to issues we come across, and maybe even educate on not so well-known topics. As always, our mission is to be that first line of contact in your worst, so we can send the best.

Have a blessed Thursday!
