In honor of Su***de Awareness Month, Evans Army Community Hospital hosted David Woods Bartley, a mental health speaker, educator and trainer Sept. 22-26, 2025.

Bartley shared his own personal experience with su***de and provided information and anecdotal lessons in dealing with the tragedy of su***de, which claims far too many lives.

According to the most recent Annual Report on Su***de in the Military, more than 550 service members died by su***de in 2023, and another 146 family members died by su***de.

EACH leadership invited Bartley to speak to staff to raise awareness, and help staff learn ways to help recognize and help prevent su***des.

Bartley, who has speaking engagements nationwide, says that he has a soft spot for the military.
“I love the military,” he said. “But the Army stands tall above all of them, because my eldest brother, John, who raised me after we lost our father, served 42 years in uniform. He enlisted in 1970 and retired as a two-star general. And he's my guy. I feel like every brief that I give in regards to this particular topic, not only do I get to serve the Army, I get to serve my brother. Thank you for the opportunity to speak to the staff at Evans Army Community Hospital.”

Service members and veterans who are in crisis or having thoughts of su***de, and those who know a Service member or veteran in crisis, can call the Veterans/Military Crisis Line for confidential support available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Call 988 and Press 1, text 838225, chat online at MilitaryCrisisLine.net.
