💊 Your Mental Health Matters—Even During Pregnancy
I’m going to say something that needs to be said louder:
There is no baby without the mother.
Recently I saw a post where a pregnant mom was being attacked for staying on her ADHD medication. The comments were full of people saying she should stop “for the baby’s sake.” But I’m here to say something very different:
A healthy baby needs a healthy mom.
I’ve been in that position myself—pregnant and on ADHD medication. I worked with my doctor, we talked through all the options, and ultimately realized the risks were actually greater if I went off the meds. Because untreated ADHD isn’t just forgetfulness—it’s emotional dysregulation, burnout, depression, and a very real threat to functioning as a parent.
Pregnancy doesn’t erase a mom’s existing needs. It doesn’t make her mental health any less important. In fact, it amplifies it.
Moms with ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar, PTSD—you are not selfish for needing support. You are not a bad mom for using medication. You are not putting your child last by putting your health first. You are protecting them the best way you can.
This might not be the popular opinion, but it’s one I stand by completely:
If the mother isn’t safe, stable, and alive, nothing else matters.
And if she’s parenting other children? They need a present, functional mom too—not just a shell of one.
This isn’t about encouraging medication without thought—it’s about informed care. It’s about respecting moms. It’s about compassion, not condemnation.
Let’s stop punishing mothers for needing help.
