Concussion rehab is filled with terms like “vestibular”, “cervicogenic”, “visual-vestibular” and even “cervico-visuo-vestibular”. Um, come again? What does this all mean??
These slides from a presentation I did earlier this year - and recently agreed to do another round next year! - are meant to simplify what your brain uses to keep you moving, balanced and confident.
Your brain takes in information from 3 main systems - your eyes (visual), your inner ear (vestibular), and your body (cervicogenic = from your neck, somatosensory = from your body).
Your brain integrates these into a picture of where you’re at and where you’re going. We often call this “position sense” and “movement sense”. Refining/rehabbing these 3 systems to give you a better picture, with less effort required, is a staple of post-concussion rehab & vestibular rehab.
