Are you looking for a Perimenopause or Menopause specialist? Here are the THREE things I would look for:

✅Experience!! This is number one! Hormones are tricky — it takes a lot of practice to learn what’s likely to work and to personalize your treatment plan. Look for at least 10 years of experience with prescribing hormones!

✅Testing! If you are not offered testing or told “it doesn’t matter”, the provider likely doesn’t know what they are looking for. For hormone levels, being in the “normal” range is not good enough. Providers who offer DUTCH testing have the highest understanding of hormones.

✅Options. Hormones are never a one-size-fits all. It takes different routes of hormone administration to achieve the safest and most effective treatment.

If you find a provider that meets all 3 of these criteria, you are in good hands! Bonus if your provider is a midlife woman 🥰

Optimizing hormones is not a one-size-fits-all approach— and because the landscape of our bodies are constantly changing during this time, dose adjustments and supplement support are constantly changing!

Here are some of the treatment considerations for managing perimenopause:

💥Is she on ENOUGH HRT to manage symptoms and preserve function (but also not too much!)
💥Have I measured detoxification pathways in order to support the safest use of hormones by the body (i.e. DUTCH testing)?
💥Are we supporting muscle, bone, skin, and hair against rapid aging?
💥Have I evaluated metabolic health — the driver of all diseases of aging — and taught her the significance of lifestyle and supplement support?
💥Does she have access to testing hormone levels as symptoms change? Blood work, or urine, or saliva (see the link for discounted Mira monitors in my bio)
💥Have I built a relationship with her, so that she feels comfortable reaching out with new concerns and trusting our collaboration?

Unfortunately, this level of care and expertise falls outside the scope of conventional medicine. Investing in TRUE prevention now will be much less expensive than managing chronic disease down the road.

The truth is that I never wanted to own my own medical practice! I made a really great employee, and was content showing up to work every day and providing the best patient care possible.

Labeling all forms of hormone replacement with the same black box warning is misleading for women AND providers.

Bioidentical hormone therapy replaces exactly what is missing or low from the body. Every organ in our body has receptors for these hormones. Every system is looking for bioidentical hormones for optimal health. They protect us from cardiovascular disease, dementias, cancers, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

Synthetic hormones look different and behave differently than our own hormones. They bind to receptors, confuse the cells, and challenge the liver with how to metabolize and eliminate them, as the systems are not naturally in place.

Hormones behave differently depending on their chemical structure, route of administration, dose, and age and health status of the individual at the time they are started. Providers should be trained in ALL these variables in order to provide the best hormone care for each individual woman.
