COLD vs ALLERGIES 🤧🌿
This is one of the most common questions I get as a pediatrician—especially this time of year. The symptoms can overlap, but a few key clues can help you quickly figure out what your child is dealing with 👇
✨ Think COLD:
• 5–10 days
• Fever common
• Thick yellow/green mucus
• Cough common
• Gradual onset
✨ Think ALLERGIES:
• Weeks to months
• No fever
• Clear, watery runny nose
• Itchy eyes/nose/throat
• Sudden (triggered)
🩺 What helps:
✔️ Cold → fluids, saline + suction, steam, humidifier, honey (>1), rest
✔️ Allergies → limit triggers, antihistamine, saline rinse, shower after outside
🚩 Call your pediatrician if your child has:
• Trouble breathing
• Dehydration / not drinking
• Severe or worsening cough
• Ear pain
• Symptoms >10 days
• Not acting like themselves
• Fever >3 days (or any fever
