Starting Friday in our Plantation Office with a visit from Jeff, a Kidney- Pancreas Transplant recipient, and patient of Dr. Gabriel Valle.šŸ’š Eight years ago Jeff was transplanted at the University of Miami /Miami Transplant Institute. His surgeon was Dr. George Burke. Prior to his transplant, Jeff was part of our award-winning home dialysis program, which allowed him to work for the entirety of the time he was on dialysis. He also now lives completely free of diabetes, something he had battled since childhood. Both Jeff and Dr. Valle are looking forward to the October 4th University Of Miami game against FSU. Go Canes! šŸ§”šŸ’ššŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Bobbie Shepherd, age 57, is celebrating 50 years with a donated kidney, making her one of the longest-living recipients from a deceased donor in the U.S. Her transplant took place in Cincinnati.
Shepherd has made the most of that gift of life.
ā€œWe have four kids, and we have 14 grandbabies.ā€
Shepherd said. She hopes to one day meet her donor’s family to thank them personally.
ā€œI would love to meet the family, and I would tell them how grateful that I have been for this, because donation lives on,ā€ Shepherd said. ā€œI’ve got kids, and now I’ve got grandbabies through her legacy.ā€ šŸ’š

The future of Transplant medicine is taking shape. At Massachusetts General Hospital, two patients from New Hampshire are showing what may be possible with pig-to-human kidney transplants (xenotransplantation):
Bill Stewart, age 54
• Received his pig kidney transplant on June 14, 2025
• Off dialysis after years of exhausting treatments
• Back to work and even returned to his dialysis clinic to give others hope
Tim Andrews, age 62
• Transplanted in January
• Still going strong after 7 months – the longest pig kidney transplant ever
• Walking within a week of surgery and living dialysis-free
Until now, the longest attempt lasted only 130 days. These results are groundbreaking.
The FDA has now approved clinical trials, where 30 patients will receive gene-edited pig kidneys. The goal: to provide lifesaving options for the 100,000+ people waiting for an organ in the U.S.
This research brings real hope. The light at the end the tunnel for kidney patients is getting brighter. šŸ’š

Dolly Parton missed the opening of her newest attraction at Dollywood with the following message-ā€œHello Dollywood! It’s me,ā€ she told fans. ā€œI know — and I’m here, and you’re there. And you’re wondering why that is? Well, I had a little problem.ā€
Parton continued, ā€œI had a kidney stone that was causing me a lot of problems, turned out it’d given me an infection, and the doctor said, ā€˜You don’t need to be traveling right this minute, so you need a few days to get better.ā€ Wishing you a speedy recovery, Dolly! 🩷

A new option just approved by the FDA.
The first nasal spray diuretic has been cleared for patients with heart, liver, and kidney disease who experience edema (fluid overload).
The medication, called Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray), offers an outpatient, self-administered alternative to oral or IV diuretics. In clinical studies, it showed rapid absorption and results similar to IV treatment—potentially helping patients avoid hospitalization.
While this is an intriguing development, our team has not yet had experience with this medication. We will keep you updated as it becomes available in our community and share our real-world perspective.

This week, three of Dr. Gabriel Valle’s patients took an important step toward a healthier future:
• Rita (67), currently on hemodialysis in West Broward, was listed at Memorial Transplant Institute.
• Felipe (37), on hemodialysis in Palm Beach County, was listed at the Cleveland Clinic Florida.
• Dominic (55), on peritoneal dialysis, is now listed at Memorial Transplant Institute.
We are honored to accompany each of you on the journey to a successful kidney transplant. Your perseverance inspires us every day. šŸ’š
At The Kidney & Hypertension Group of South Florida, Dr. Valle and Dr. Bejar share a commitment to helping patients receive kidney transplants before dialysis is needed whenever possible. This philosophy of proactive, patient-centered care reflects our dedication to excellence in delivering kidney medicine.

Three months ago at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Stewart Andrews, age 62, received a genetically edited pig kidney. After years of dialysis, the surgery gave him a chance to live without the exhausting routine of treatments.
Today, Andrews is back at work and even returned to his old dialysis clinic to give others hope. Doctors made early adjustments to his medications, but he continues to do well. ā€œIf this helps in any small way, it will be worth it for me,ā€ he says.
Now the FDA has approved large clinical trials to expand this breakthrough. Companies such as eGenesis and United Therapeutics will transplant gene-edited pig kidneys into patients on dialysis who are waiting for a human organ. With over 100,000 Americans on the transplant list, most needing a kidney, even one year off dialysis would be considered a major advance.
Andrews’ journey shows how close science is to changing the future of kidney transplantation.

Kidney Health Breakthrough from the ERA Congress
At the recent 62nd European Renal Association Congress, researchers shared results from the CONFIDENCE trial and the findings have the kidney world buzzing.
In over 800 adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes, the combination of two therapies—finerenone and empagliflozin—proved far more powerful than either drug alone.
:Results:
• Combination therapy reduced kidney damage markers (UACR) by 52% in just 6 months.
• This was an additional 29–32% improvement compared to each drug on its own.
• 70% of patients reached the recommended target for lowering protein in the urine—a major step in protecting kidneys and hearts.
What this means: The future of kidney care may lie in smart combinations of therapies that work together to slow disease and protect overall health.
At The Kidney & Hypertension Group of South Florida, our nephrologist Dr. Gabriel Valle and Dr. Carlos Bejar stay at the forefront of global kidney research. By keeping up with cutting-edge findings like this, we ensure our patients benefit from the most advanced strategies to preserve kidney function, control blood pressure, and protect the heart.

At the 62nd American Heart Association Scientific Meeting, researchers shared encouraging results from the FigHTN Phase 2 trial of baxdrostat, a new medication that works by lowering the hormone aldosterone.
Key Findings: ā–«ļøWhen added to current treatments, baxdrostat lowered systolic blood pressure by about 5% in patients with chronic kidney disease and uncontrolled hypertension.
ā–«ļøIt reduced protein loss in the urine by 55% compared to placebo — a strong marker of kidney and heart protection.
ā–«ļøThis suggests baxdrostat may help delay kidney disease progression and improve long-term outcomes.
While these results are still preliminary, they highlight exciting progress in the fight against uncontrolled high blood pressure — one of the biggest drivers of kidney disease worldwide.
At The Kidney & Hypertension Group of South Florida, P.A., both Dr. Gabriel Valle and Dr. Carlos Bejar are Board Certified Hypertension Specialists—a rare distinction held by only ~1,500 doctors worldwide. Our team stays at the forefront of groundbreaking research like this to bring next level kidney and blood pressure care to our community.

Important Kidney Health Update
A new study published in BMC Nephrology has raised important concerns about the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)—commonly prescribed for stomach issues—among people with moderate to advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Researchers followed more than 80,000 patients in Taiwan and found that:
• CKD patients on PPIs had a higher risk of kidney disease progressing to dialysis (end-stage renal disease).
• They also faced a higher risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) compared with patients taking H2 blockers (like famotidine).
• Certain PPIs, such as omeprazole and esomeprazole, were linked to particularly high risks. The takeaway: not all acid reflux medications are equal when it comes to kidney safety. Choosing the right option matters.
At The Kidney & Hypertension Group of South Florida, our doctors—Dr. Gabriel Valle and Dr. Carlos Bejar—are experts in navigating exactly these kinds of studies. By staying on top of emerging research, they help patients make informed choices to protect their kidneys, slow disease progression, and prevent decline.
Your kidneys deserve next-level care, guided by doctors who know how to balance the risks and benefits of every medication. That’s what sets us apart.
