Before store shelves were lined with fancy bars and body washes, people in the Appalachian hills made their own soap—from scratch, by hand, and with deep respect for what the land gave them.
Up until the early 1900s, soap-making season in the mountains often coincided with hog-killing time. Nothing was wasted. The fat from the hogs was rendered into lard, which became the base for the family’s soap. But lard alone wasn’t enough. They also needed lye, the ingredient that turns fat into soap through a process called saponification.
Lye didn’t come from a bottle—it came from the earth and the fire. Families would collect rainwater, then filter it through wood ashes in something called an ash hopper. What came out was a strong lye solution, ready to be boiled with lard and water until it thickened into soap.
Once set and cut, those bars weren’t just for washing hands. They were used for laundry, dishes, floors, and bodies. The process was long and hard, but it was necessary—and it reflected something deeper than hygiene. It reflected a way of life built on self-reliance, respect for nature, and making do with what you had.
In an era where we toss away the old for the new, this tradition reminds us of the generations who came before us—those who could make something out of nothing and who treated every part of the land, and the animals they raised, with purpose and care.
Homemade soap wasn’t just a product—it was a symbol of survival.
